Title: Agricultural Resources
1Agricultural Resources
- A variety of agricultural resources in the
community and around the area.
2Eads Consumer Supply
- People in the community go to Eads Consumer
Supply for all their agricultural needs - Animal Feed (Livestock and Pet)
- General Maintenance ( vehicle and truck tire
change, oil change, ect.) - Farming supplies ( anhydrous)
3Saffer Spray Service
Saffer Spray Service is locally owned and
operated by Roger and Loraine Saffer. They have
an office on Main Street and then a warehouse
west of town about a mile. They specialize in
aerial and ground spraying of crops. They also
sell chemicals and seed from the warehouse. It is
a business in the community that grows more and
more each year. Local farmers and ranchers
appreciate their service a great deal.
4Bartlett Company
Bartlett Company is where most farmers in the
community take their crops to be sold after they
are harvested.
There are two elevators in the area that are
still used today. One in Eads and one in Towner.
They are both operated by people in our
community. Frank Miller is the general manager of
both elevators.
5 Farmers Market
- Farmers Market is held on every Saturday in the
summer at the city park. Local garden growers
bring their fresh produce to be sold to the
community. Some local sellers are the Lindholms,
Ellicotts, and Eders.
6Crops in the area
Cultivated acres of land generally fall into two
classes of soil, sandy and loam. Sandy land has
traditionally been planted to continuous crops
like grain sorghum and forage sorghum while the
loamy soil has been planted to winter wheat in a
summer fallow rotation. Farmers in the area also
crow crops such as corn and sunflowers. When
precipitation is fair, the crops grown in the
area are beautiful.
7Great Plains Oil
Great Plains Oil is located in Eads, CO.
Great Plains Oil is a mixing plant that mixes
sunflower and canola oil to be sold at various
locations such as Big R in Lamar. It is a growing
business and hopefully one day the product will
be sold at stores nationwide.
8Heritage Farms
Heritage Farms is located East of Eads and
employs many people in the community. They raise
pigs from the time they are babies until big
enough to sell or slaughter. The employees work
in a highly sensitive and secure site, free from
any germs or viruses that could wipe out the pig
population.
9L M Processing
- L M Processing is the only processing plant
that is open in Kiowa County. It is located in
Haswell and the owners are Scott and Polly
Gyurman. They process cattle and pigs. There was
a processing plant in Eads for many years until
the original owners decided to retire. After that
it was taken over by new owners but it was not
kept open because of various reasons. It has been
closed now for some years. Hopefully, one day,
someone will want to open it and start a
business.
10FFA (Future Farmers of America)
Eads Future Farmers of America (FFA) has been
established for nine years. FFA is the largest
youth organization in the nation. Seventy percent
of Eads High School belongs to FFA. They are an
organization that helps out the community a great
deal. They not only clean up the highways every
other month, but they have a labor auction every
year. The community then has a chance to bid on
the kids and what they pay for that individual
goes towards the FFA chapter. In return the buyer
gets eight hours of work out of that individual.
The FFA chapter is known through out the
community for all their contributions. They
contribute a great deal to the community and the
organization grows more and more each year.
11Grazing land VS Crop land
Grazing land in our community has been scarce for
sometime now because of the precipitation we have
not received. We have been in a drought for the
past four years, so most farmers and ranchers
have had to rely on crops to feed their
livestock. Grazing land around our area is very
good when we have precipitation but when we
dont, it is just like the desert. Nothing grows
and what does grow, it does not feed our animals
well enough. In the past couple of years cattle
owners have had to turn to CRP to feed their
animals.
Our crops look beautiful in the spring and fall
when we do get enough precipitation. Farmers in
the community can grow just about anything. From
beautiful wheat in the winter, to gorgeous
sunflowers in late summer, early fall. Everything
that is grown is dry land and the farmers have to
rely on nature. We do not have enough water in
the area to have irrigation.
