2What are the major points so far that have
happened in the artworld since Manet?
So whats next?
3Look at Still Life with Apples, by Cézanne
(1890-94)
What do you think happens to a form when it is
abstracted? What does abstracting mean? How
have the forms (apples, cup, saucer, bowl) in
this still life been abstracted?
4Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)
? Cézanne is known as the Father of Modern
Painting. ? He had more interest in form than
subject matter and began abstracting forms. ?
He began to show more than one perspective at the
same time, which paved the way for Cubism.
5- Cézanne was obsessed with how to show 3-D form on
a 2-D canvas, and this obsession meant he had
little interest in subject matter.
Cézanne His Innovations
2. Cézannes work also showed more than one
perspective at the same time in order to fully
explore form. If you can show more than one side
of an object at a time, you are better able to
understand the form of the object.
3. Cézanne abstracted forms by focusing on a
forms basic shape and flattening out the object
by overlooking details and concentrating on the
shape and space a form occupied in the work.
6Where do you see the innovation?
What does Cézanne do to show the three-dimensions
of the peppermint bottle on the flat
canvas? Where do you see more than one
perspective in this painting? How has Cézanne
abstracted the forms in this still life? What
basic shapes is Cézanne using?
Still Life with Peppermint Bottle (1890-94)
Why do you think Cézanne focused on form in his
paintings even though people werent as
interested in it as he was?
7Paul Cézanne (1839 1906)
Still Life with Plate of Cherries, 1885-87
Mont Saint-Victoire, 1885-87
Hortense Fiquet in a Striped Skirt, 1877-78
Can you convince a potential buyer why Cezannes
work is so important by talking about his
innovations?
8 Compared to other painters from the 19th century
(Manet through Lautrec), why do you think
Cézannes work was considered so innovative?
