How do you think French artists reacted to

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 1901)
  • Toulouse-Lautrec is most famous for capturing the
Parisian nightlife of the late 19th century in
    paintings and lithographs.
  • Because his legs were broken as a child and due
to illness, his growth was stunted as an adult.
  • Toulouse-Lautrec visited the Moulin Rouge often
and would come home to make paintings of what he
    saw.

Edvard Munch (1863 1934) (pronounced Moonk)
  • Munch worked with intense psychological and
    emotional themes.
  • Theme subjects often included depression, death,
    isolation, sickness, and fear.
  • Munch is recognized for developing a style using
color, line, and distortion of the human figure
    for expressive ends.

Gustav Klimt (1862 1918)
  • Klimts work is part of the Art Nouveau movement.
  • Klimt was influenced by various styles such as
classical Greek, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Minoan
    art, and late-medieval painting.
  • Klimts work uses intricate patterns of tiny
    shapes and often gold backgrounds.

8

Gustav Klimt (1862 1918)
  • Why do you think Klimt used such elaborate
patterns and designs in place of clothing and
    scenery in this painting?
  • What kind of significance (if any) do you think
Klimts use of gold paint has in this work?
