Introduction

• Here, you can easily see the differences between
  North and South Italy The North has lots of
  flat fertile plain and the large mountain range
  called the Dolomites. Moving down to the South,
  it is considerably more baron and rocky, plus a
  hotter climate as it is nearer to the equator.

Why?

• Firstly, the North Italian Plain. A long time
  ago, the northern plain was non-existant and
  rocky. However, rivers in the alps and Apennines
  carried sediment and deposited it where we now
  call the northern plain.

Why? (Again)

• The South was once part of the Mediterranean sea.
  Rocks were formed as a sediment on the sea bed
  and later pushed upwards and together to form the
  Apennines. These earth movements still occur
  today in the form of serious earthquakes and
  volcanic eruptions.
