• Similar to system shown at January 23 NET Meeting
• Some bugs subsequently found at GSFC fixed
• Additional damping added to T(p) retrieval step
• Namelist parameter
• Used primarily to achieve and demonstrate
  equivalence of GSFC and JPL code

IMPROVEMENTS SINCE VERSION 2.8

• Version 7.0 RTA is used
• Physics Error term has been added to channel
  noise covariance matrix
• Needs further research
• Some optimization done to namelist parameters
• Damping parameters for each retrieval step
• Rejection parameter thresholds
• Percentage yield is improved considerably
• Accuracy is improved somewhat
• Version 3.0 should be a modest improvement over
  Version 2.8
• Key Elements Affecting Retrieval Are Still Missing

KEY MISSING ELEMENTS

• Antenna correction for AMSU/HSB
• Currently ocean based tuning coefficients are
  used
• AMSU retrievals are very poor over land
• Problem may go away
• RTA must be upgraded to account for missing
  absorber (sea salt?)
• Ocean skin temperature is biased cold at large
  angles
• Lower tropospheric temperature may be degraded
  as well
• First product regression coefficients are not yet
  ready
• Code to incorporate latest regression into level
  2 algorithm not ready at GSFC

VERSION 3.0 - TO BE RUN AT DAAC

• Version 3.0 should be tested at GSFC, running at
  JPL by 3/11
• Version 3.0 will still have key elements missing
• Version 3.0 will produce useful data for
  scientific community
• But not meet AIRS requirements
• We are optimistic next delivery to DAAC in six
  months will meet requirements
• All key elements will be in place
• Adequate time will be available to optimize and
  test the system
