Lesson objective To know how to use our new
Ordnance Survey Maps. To be able to recognise
place names and where they came from.

Your first task before we get our new maps is to
find the meaning of some place names.

• Use this website to help you with the next
  activity. http//www.fatbadgers.co.uk/britain/plac
  es.htm.
• Find what the following names mean
• Caster, Street, Port, Foss, Chester, Cester.
• Castell, Capel, Avon, Bed.
• Burn, Fell, Field, Moor,Ham,Fall.
• You must include the times when the names
  developed and a brief explanation.

• Find a place from the Atlas for each of the names
  from the website.
