What is geography?
  • Geography is the study of the worlds surface
    and mans interaction within the environment.
  • Geography has two parts
  • Physical- the study of the earths natural
    features such as rivers, mountains, soil,
    vegetation, and weather.
  • Human (Cultural)- the study of human cultures
    and man made features

  • Location
  • Place
  • Movement
  • Human Environment Interaction
  • Region

Location
  • Where something or someone is
  • Answers the question, where are we?
  • Two types of location
  • Absolute- actual site where something is found.
    Examples street address, longitude and latitude
  • Relative- where something is in relationship to
    something else. Examples I live behind the
    Riverbend.

Place
  • The characteristics of a certain place.
  • Answers the question, what is it like?
  • Two types of characteristics
  • Human- man made. Examples Buildings, roads,
    clothing
  • Physical- natural. Examples mountains, rivers,
    soils, beaches

Human Environmental Interaction
  • The affect humans and the environment have on
    each other.
  • Answers the question, how have humans adapted to
    or changed the environment?
  • Examples pollution, infrastructure, clothing

Movement
  • The moving of people, goods, and ideas from one
    place to another.
  • Examples people move through travel
  • goods move through trade
  • ideas move through e-mail

Region
  • Area of the earth that has similar
    characteristics
  • Regions can be based on language, politics,
    physical features, etc.
  • Examples Francophone, English
  • United States, Brazil, England
  • Rocky Mountain, Mediterranean
