• Orthosis - Usually a permanent device although
  synonymous with splint
• Protective - immobilize, block motion at a
  certain point, maintain joint alignment,
  stabilize an unstable joint of fractured bone,
  exert traction
• Corrective - correct contracture, subluxation of
  joint or tendon
• Assistive orthosis - assist with joint movements
  when muscle paralysis present, reduce muscle
  tone
• Brace - Usually of a high temperature plastic for
  long term use
• Splint - Usually a temporary device
• Sling - Supports an extremity or joint

• Nonarticular skeletal stabilization, scar
  control (see overhead picture)
• Static complete immobilizes joint rest, ROM,
  muscle tone
• Static motion-blocking allows full range of
  motion in one direction and restricted motion in
  the opposite direction swan-neck deformity
• Serial-static or static-progressive series of
  splints to increase ROM - casting

• Dynamic passive pulling force in one direction
  while permitting active-resistive motion in the
  opposite direction - outrigger
• Tenodesis Links active wrist extension with
  passive finger flexion
• Continuous passive motion electrical unit that
  moves joints through entire ROM
