    answering questions in labs

3
Agenda
  • Installation preparations - planning
  • Partitioning the Hard Disk
  • File Systems NTFS vs. FAT32
  • Server name Admin acct
  • Choose Licensing Method
  • Domain or Workgroup Membership
  • Server Optional Components
  • Networking Components

4
Installation preparations
  • Decisions to make in advance
  • How to partition the disk
  • What file system to use
  • What the server name will be
  • Password for the administrator account
  • Protocols to be selected
  • What licensing method will be used
  • If the server will be a DC and what the domain
    name will be

5
Partitioning the Hard Disk
  • Partitioning a hard disk section is set up for
    use by an operating system
  • A hard disk contains one or more partitions
  • Each partition is a logical drive
  • Each partition can use a different file system
  • You can
  • Use an existing partition
  • Delete an existing partition and create a new one
  • Create a new partition, if one does not exist
  • MS recommends 2 GB

6
File systems NTFS vs FAT
  • File Allocation Table (FAT) an older file system
that was designed for computers with small disk
    systems
  • Initially developed to use with MS-DOS
  • The NT File System (NTFS) is the native Win NT
    and W2K file system
  • Designed for a network server environment
  • Advantages long file names file compression
large file capacity file activity tracking
    Active Directory

7
Server name Admin acct pswd
  • Server name affects everyone who uses the server
  • Descriptive of servers function, or
  • Reflective of the organization that uses it
  • Not already used by another network computer
  • Use a strong password
  • 7 chars
  • Combination of letters, s, and symbols
  • At least one symbol in chars 2-6

8
Choose licensing method
  • Per seat licensing
  • Purchasing a separate license for each client
    that will access the server
  • Per server licensing
  • Each server is granted a limited number of client
access licenses (CALs) - clients that can log
    on the same time
  • More cost-effective for larger settings
  • Default W2K includes 5 per server or per seat
    licenses

9
Domain or Workgroup Membership
  • Domain a collection of accounts and network
resources called objects - grouped within a
    boundary.
  • All user accounts are stored in a centralized
database - Active Directory - on the domain
    controllers.
  • Active Directory (AD) a database of computers,
users, groups, shared printers, shared folders,
    and other network resources

10
Domain or Workgroup Membership(cont)
  • A computer with W2K Server installed can be
configured as the Domain Controller (DC), or can
be added to an existing domain as a member
    server.
  • A member server does not have a copy of the AD
  • Types of member servers
  • SQL Server, DHCP Server, Web server, file and
    print server, etc

11
Domain or Workgroup Membership(cont)
  • Workgroup a grouping of computers that share
    resources in a decentralized way
  • generally used in peer-to-peer networks
  • There is no centralized storage or account mgmt
  • Network mgmt becomes more difficult
  • Each computer has its own account database and is
    administered separately
  • Security is not shared between computers
  • When workgroup grows to 10 members, peer-to-peer
    networking is less effective

12
Server Optional Components
  • There are some optional components you can
    install.
  • You can add any optional components later through
    the Add/Remove Programs app.
  • Accessories and utilities
  • Indexing service
  • Internet Information Services (IIS)
  • Provides support for Web site creation and
management, along with File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

13
Networking Services
  • COM Internet Services Proxy
  • supports distributed applications that use HTTP
    to communicate through Internet Information
    Services
  • Domain Name System (DNS) address resolution
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
  • Simple TCP/IP Services
  • Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) name
resolution for clients running NT and earlier OS
