Title: Seizure Recovery System For Fuel System Distributor

1
Seizure Recovery System For Fuel System
Distributor
  • Project Scope
  • Sponsored by Cummins Engine Company
  • Team 11
  • Michal Brown, Keron Miller,
  • Sean Edwards, Ben Nuttall

2
  • Background Information
  • Cummins has a fuel system distributor in
production that seizes during overheating or
    debris ingestion.
  • The warranty cost associated with the repair of
    the part is significant.
  • Down time due to part failure is too long.

3
  • Proposed Problem Solution
  • Design and validate a mechanism that will enable
the rotor to break away from the gear pump shaft
to prevent the shaft from breaking.
  • Design the mechanism to allow for re- engagement
of the rotor after the torque falls below a
    threshold level
  • Maintain the timing of the rotor upon
    re- engagement.

4
  • Proposed Problem Solution, contd
  • Prototypes of potential solutions will be built
    and tested.

5
  • Design Parameters
  • The target disengagement torque should be within
15-20 in-lb, the drag torque while disengaged
should be less than 5 in-lbs
  • The drive must withstand normal operation
    indefinitely.
  • Must be capable of disengaging/re-engaging for
at least 100 seizures without loss in torque.
  • Wear resistance must be as good or better than
    current design

6
  • Design Parameters contd
  • The angular alignment of the drive must be as
good as the current design and must be able to
    rotate in both directions.
  • The drive must be backwards compatible with the
    current distributor and other components.
  • Cost increase of the new design over the old
design should be kept to a minimum.
