2Evidence Based Practice
- The rationale for self-help
- What is self-help? guided vs. non-guided
self-help - What are the active ingredients of self-help
- What is the appropriate health technology?
- Who should deliver self-help?
- What level of guidance is required?
- What is the appropriate nature of the guidance?
3How do we make sure we are using the right
materials?
- A constantly evolving market!
- Different models
- Different styles
- Different modes of delivery
- Core skill is to be able to appraise materials
- What questions do we need to ask of materials and
resources?
4Self-help as a Health Education Continuum
- Intervention at any level should aim to work in
partnership with the client to help them
understand and master their difficulties to the
best of their ability

5Promoting self management is a skilled activity
- Facilitators need to be trained and knowledgeable
in evidence based models - May a solution in itself or part of solution (eg
holding for HI work or access to practical help
with life problems) - Accessible practical locations
- Targeting vulnerable groups and widening access
equity of health provision - Embedded within a system where review/audit of
materials is seen as core task

9Selling Self Help
- Understanding the rationale for using materials
- Located within an individualised problem
formulation vs generic information - Being able to adapt to individuals needs if
required (eg language / literacy) - Providing structure for F/U as required and using
intelligently to support face to face contact.
10Conclusions
- LI workers need
- To be informed by the evidence base
- To have the skills to critically appraise
materials - To be able to provide a meaningful rationale for
self- help materials - To be supported within a system which conducts
regular audit and reviews materials and their
availability
