  • The dairy farm owns 600 acres of land. This
is situated in the center of Buckinghamshires
Chiltern Hills. On this land, they have 120
Jersey cows and 270 Friesian cows. The farms
jersey cows milk are used to make ice-cream and
the Friesian cows milk are transported to the
market. They produced milk for 13 years ranging
from 500 litres to 2.5 litres every year.
  • The farm is an independent company owned by
the partners Susie and Andrew. They started out
as 2 people but have developed into a bigger farm
    containing 22 people.

Type of farming
  • Beechdean is an extensive farm. It means that it
has a small input but uses a large amount of
land. This is common for farms with animals.

Affect of Government Policies
  • Milk Quotas To reduce overproduction, the EU has
imposed heavy milk quotas on dairy farms. This
was a big problem for the farm, because it would
reduce the farms income. To solve this problem,
the farm decided to split the farm into 2 groups.
Ice-cream manufacturing and milking of cows.
  • Prices dropped Due to government policies, there
have been a dramatic drop in dairy product
prices. Farmers have been forced to sell their
products at very low prices. Many farmers like
the Beechdean farm had trouble supporting their
families due to the loss of income.

6
Scientific Advances
  • The Beechdean farm bought ice-cream machinery to
    help them make ice-cream!
  • The ice-cream machinery they bought speeded up
    their ice-cream production.
  • They also bought a van to speed up the delivery
    process.
  • The business is growing quickly and is becoming
    highly successful.

Conclusion
Conclusion
  • The Beechdean farm is a extensive, commercial,
    and pastoral farm.
  • They have an excellent system of inputs and
outputs which may be fed back into the system as
    income for the farm.
  • Though government policies have affected the
farm, the farm has used ice-cream as a way to
    overcome these problems.
  • Through scientific advances in machinery, the
Beechdean farm has managed to produce high
    quality ice-cream!
