1
A New Culture Emerges
2
A New Era Emerges
  • The GI Bill helped change American society as it
offered to send former soldiers to college and
low-interest mortgages to veterans who wanted to
    buy homes
  • Due to this spur in production, 13 million homes
were built during the 1950s and 18 percent more
    Americans became homeowners.
  • These changes helped usher in a new era.

3
New Cars Lead To
  • During the 1950s a record 58 million cars were
    sold
  • Auto makers now catered to the needs and wants of
the American public and began making cars that
    appealed to people
  • New things such as fast food drive-ins and
    drive-in theaters became popular.
  • President Eisenhower also created an interstate
highway system after his experience in WWII.

4
The Growth of the Suburbs
  • Now people could drive to work and didnt have to
live as close to their jobs.
  • The suburbs also became popular because the
housing was affordable and now 1/5 of America
    lived in suburbs.
  • People also began to move out West and into the
    Southwest to warmer climates

5
Good Economic Times Lead To
  • The baby boom with a child being born every 7
seconds in the 1950s and this continued on until
    the 1960s.
  • The baby boom generation was the first to pay
close attention to what was on television.
  • T.V. shows like the Lone Ranger, Lassie, and The
    Mickey Mouse Club Emerged

6
New Medical and Ideological Breakthroughs
  • Dr. Jonas Salk introduced a new vaccine that was
meant to deal with polio, a disease that affected
    58,000 people in 1952.
  • People that were affected with the worst aspects
of this were confined to iron lungs
  • Dr. Benjamin Spock also came up with a theory
that said early childhood experiences influence
    an individuals entire life.
