    shopping experience while being an active member

  • To provide the most convenient shopping
    experience for the customers, all the while
    delivering to them the highest quality goods for
    the most reasonable prices.

Strategic Objective
  • To gain the largest market share amongst the four
    supermarkets in the Amherst area and maintain
    this status as it grows and expands. Stop and
    Shop will do this by being receptive to its
    customers needs, allowing for them to find
    everything conveniently located, and by using
    their buying power to get the best prices for the
    products they sell.

General Environment
  • Demographic Segment - They provide service for
    the majority of the Amherst area (all ages) with
    the exception of those who prefer the niche
    marketplaces (Whole Foods and Trader Joes),
    focusing primarily on those with income on the
    lower side such as the college student.
  • Sociocultural Segment - well rounded company,
    hiring people of all shapes, sizes and colors,
    and also catering to all types of people. They
    are very concerned with the community as well,
    particularly the family (prepared dinners etc.)
  • Political and Legal Segment - politically correct
    store with a variety of products from all genres
    and areas around the globe. 
  • Technological Segment - uses up to date computers
    and security systems.  They have implimented the
    self check-out, as well as the peapod service.
  • Economic segment - strive to be a price leader,
    so when something increases, they are affected
    (Minimum wage, price of corn, etc.).
  • Global segment - located in over 180 communities
    in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New
    York, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Only food
    bought from other countries would have a great
    effect on them.

Attract, Develop, and Retain Human Capital
  • Attract- Stop Shop does a great job of
    attracting new workers. They have competitive
    salaries and benefits, and provide quality
    training. They promise to treat each associate
    with the utmost dignity and respect. In
    addition, they offer growth opportunities to the
    management in the form of bonuses based on the
    stores performance.
  • Develop- Stop Shop has training programs
    specific to individual jobs which enable the
    workers to effectively and efficiently serve the
    customers.
  • Retain- Retaining employees is difficult in the
    grocery business because for some of the jobs, it
    is either part time or a first job however,
    they do quite well. They have pay increase plans
    which are based on manager reviews, as well as
    incentive plans that allow higher level employees
    to get bonuses in accordance with the performance
    of their stores.

  • Convenient Store Hours 24 hours Monday-Friday
    and 6 am -12 pm Saturday and Sunday.
  • One Stop Shopping pharmacy, Citizens Bank,
    Staples, Dunkin Donuts, florist, pre-made
    section, and Red Box.
  • Pea Pod Home Delivery allows for grocery needs
    to be met even when customers cannot get to the
    store.
  • Self Check Out faster check out when employee
    ones are busy.
  • Easy Navigation convenient pathways around the
    store.
  • Wide variety of Products customers do not have
    to go elsewhere for products

Weaknesses
  • Does Not Sell Liquor competitors do sell and may
    be missing out.
  • Location of Competitors all competitors are
    within a mile of the store and so customers can
    easily seek them out.
  • Demographic the large student population can be
    price sensitive and are willing to go to where
    the best sale is that week.
