WHY BOTHER TO CUT EMISSIONS? WHY CHANGE THE

James Hansen NASA Goddard 7 April 08 we have

BASIC LOGIC FOR FUEL SAVING. HGV weighs up to
30,000 kg. (unladen). 40 capsules weigh up to 680
kg. (unladen). 40 times less weight. Smart
shorter routing underground. NB - Heat loss,
Friction, Traffic Jams, and also Road/Pipeline
wear and tear.
6
Replace a 44 tonne, 40 metre trucks with 20 30
ultra-light, carbon fibre cargo-capsules propel
them through pipelines with Linear Induction
Motors.
WILL THEY CHANGE? The traditional freight
industry is deeply entrenched at every level of
government and commerce. In 1969 in the USA, the
truck lobby stopped 10 inch pneumatic
capsule-pipeline transport of mail.
WHAT DOES IT COST? - Jan 2008 M25 new lanes -
28 M /km. HGVs do 80 of the damage to
roads. FOODTUBES will cost 5 M /km and last
50 years. Interlinked 150 km sections will be
built, connecting farms, manufacturers and
retailers Public Terminals for small business
use. Terminals at school university campuses,
office blocks and military camps. A 1.57 Cubic
Metres cargo-capsule journey will be charged at
about 10. IN THE FUTURE - IF FOODTUBES SPAN
THE GLOBE. 3rd world farmers and starving
communities will benefit. A Farm-to-markets,
FOODTUBES proposal has been outlined to help
Argentine farmers.

Finally Even the best carbon saving transport
ideas will not get off the ground or, in this
case, under-the-ground if they cost the
Earth and make a loss. The initial
calculations are very encouraging. A complete
system for the UK will earn annual revenues of
20 billion dollars and a surplus of 15 billion
dollars. So FOODTUBES saves the Earth and
makes a profit. Thank you for your attention.

Burying polyethylene pipes locks up carbon
tarmac tyres create a toxic and continual
carbon dust (road surface wear tear). Volume
for 23M households is approx 1.5Million cubic
metres per day weight is about 88,386 tonnes.
Most food is transported several times in the
processes from farm to home. UK 697,880 HGVs
and Vans transport food (MoT) many times the
tonnage and volume capacity compared to the
goods. These vehicles burn about 5B litres a
year. All UK road freight burns 16.9B litres per
year. All traffic burns 64B litres p.a.
V. conservative in our financial calcs. - ALL
UK ENERGY equivalent to 188B litres p.a. thus UK
is 9 saved not 23 (global average is less in
dense, developed OECD countries). NB Remember
that traffic decongestion effect is the largest
saving 3 times larger. Shopping per person

journey is not relevant it is the total load in
the system that counts but probably 50-100klms

POLLUTION.
