1
The Real Scoop On Myths
2
Mythology
  • There are six reasons of mythology
  • (1) explaining the creation of the world,
  • (2) to explain natural phenomena,
  • (3)to give a story form to ancient religious
    practices,
  • (4) to teach moral lessons,
  • (5)to explain history, And
  • (6)to express, as dreams do, the deepest fears
and hopes of the human race.

3
Explaining Mythology (Cont)
  • We will be looking at four major civilizations
that shared traits of mythology. And
  • We will be comparing and contrasting these traits.

4
Egyptian Mythology
  • Egypt was a place of mystery and beauty. You just
have to think about their pyramids, gods and
    their legends.
  • There were many Egyptian gods. The chief god was
Amen-Re or, for short, Ra. This god was the sun
god ,the most powerful of all the gods.

5
Amen-Re
  • There were many different gods in ancient Egypt.
Amen-Re was the son of Nut, and being the most
powerful, was the chief god and god of the sun.
But wait! were not done! There are more!

6
Other Gods
  • There were over two thousand gods and goddesses
alone in Egypt. To name a few
  • Osiris and Isis- husband and wife Osiris was the
god of the underworld. Isis was the goddess of
    motherhood and children
  • Horus- falcon headed, son of Osiris and Isis
killed uncle, Set, for killing father. Protective
eye of Horus is used for the protection of the
    slit made during mummification

7
Greek and Roman Mythology
  • The stories of ancient Greece and Rome are
stories about gods and goddesses. The gods and
goddesses were powerful beings, often identified
with a natural force. The Romans were so
impressed with the Greek culture that they took
in the Greek myths into their own religion.

Greek Mythology
9
Grecian Gods And Goddesses
  • There were many gods and goddesses in ancient
Grecian religion. To name a few
  • Cronos
  • Zeus
  • Hera
  • Ares
  • Poseidon and
  • Apollo

10
Roman Mythology
11
Rome Wasn't Built in a Day
  • Roman beliefs came from and were modeled after
Greek beliefs. After the Romans came into Greece
they saw that most of what Greece had was good
and they adopted the Grecian beliefs. The gods
Greece had were also adopted by Romans. All the
Romans did was change the names of the Grecian
    gods.

12
Roman Gods and Goddesses
  • Rome adopted the Grecian beliefs. Their gods were
the same beings with different names. To name a
few of these gods (in the same order)
  • Saturn
  • Jupiter
  • Juno
  • Mars
  • Neptune and
  • Apollo

13
Norse Mythology
14
Ah the Vikings
  • The Vikings, or Norse, were a very war like
people that came soon after the fall of the Roman
empire. They had very interesting gods and
goddesses, some of which were the same beings as
the Roman and the earlier Grecian gods had.
  • Odin- chief god of all Viking beliefs

15
Norse Gods and Goddesses
  • Some of the many gods and goddesses were
  • Freya- Goddesses of beauty, love and war.
  • Skadi- goddess of winter
  • Hemidall-gold-toothed guardian of Bifrost, the
rainbow bridge leading to Asgard, the home of the
    Gods.

16
Influences on Today's Everyday Life
  • The ancients created many things we use today,
one of the most important being the alphabet.
  • They also created our styles of government,
mathematics, our sciences, our agriculture, and
    our fashion and entertainment.
  • The ancients pretty much had a huge effect on
    todays modern life.
