2
Rising Costs and the Aggie Experience
  • Financial Comparisons Then and Now
  • Annual cost of attending Texas AM
  • In 1980 2,911
  • In 2008 19,950

3
Rising Costs at Texas AM
  • Dwindling State Appropriations
  • 1992 45 of budget from state
  • 2007 26 of budget from state
  • Necessity to raise tuition
  • In early 80s, tuition was 4 per semester credit
    hour
  • Today, tuition is 160 per semester credit hour
  • For average course load in 1980, students paid
    203 (tuition and mandatory fees)
  • Today, that cost is 3,922

4
Rising Costs at Texas AM
  • Nationwide, state appropriations for higher
education are at a 25-year low
  • In absolute dollars, state appropriations to AM
have increased over time, but have not kept up
with inflation and rising costs associated with
    operating a university
  • Enrollment in Texas public colleges and
universities has increased at a rate greater than
the national average, making it even more
difficult for the state to finance higher
    education

Rising Costs at Texas AM
  • Texas higher education funding seems quite
large, but when broken down into a per capita
amount, it is actually very low compared to other
    states
  • Further complicating the picture in Texas are the
sheer numbers of higher education institutions
competing for state funding, including community
    colleges

9
Financial Challenges of Todays Students
  • Many universities are providing students with
scholarships in lieu of loans. To remain
competitive, we must offer strong scholarship and
    graduate fellowship support
  • More than half of todays AM students take out
loans graduating with an average debt of 19,981,
which impacts decisions to attend graduate school
or career plans, and diminishes future
    philanthropy
  • Student employment detracts from the Aggie
Experience (51 of students not involved cite
    work commitments as primary reason)

10
  • Scholarship Initiative Goal 300 million

  • Bring top high school grads to AM
