Water Testing Procedure

• Dipped small specimen jar into water to collect
  sample
• Dipped the aquachek test strip into sample water
  for one second
• -For Chlorine, Alkalinity, and pH placed in
  water for 30 seconds

• 3) Measure the color of test strip to sample
  chart on the side of the bottle
• 4) Record the data found onto a spreadsheet

Total Free Chlorine

• Not found in nature because it is a reactive gas
  element
• Used to kill disease causing micro-organisms in
  drinking water
• EPA says Free Chlorine should be _at_ .2ppm or less
  for safe consumption
• Total Chlorine should be _at_ or above 1 ppm or
  water will have odor and unpleasant taste

• 1st described as the waters ability to separate
  soap from the solution
• Visual indications are mineral deposits (ex.
  rings of insoluble soap scum in bathtub
• Consist of calcium and magnesium poses no health

  and nutrients present

• EPA has no standard for Hardness

Alkalinity

• Ability of solutes in an aqueous system to
  neutralize present acids
• Natural water has a combination of bicarbonate,
  carbonate, and hydroxyl ions
• Sewage and waste waters have a higher alkalinity
• EPA suggests levels _at_or above 80ppm
• -readings above 120 may relate to
  unpleasant taste

• pH is from the French words puissance dhydrogene
  meaning strength of hydrogen
• Measure of hydrogen ion in an aqueous solution
• Scale ranges from 1-14
• 1-6 acidic
• 8-14 basic
• 7 neutral
• drinking water ranges between 6-9

What is Distilled Water?

• Different from tap water because it is boiled
  until it turns to steam or water vapor
• Theory is that any contaminants in original water
  will evaporate
• Also called deionized
• It is SAFE to drink
