Emotional Abuse
  • Makes you feel worthlessness
  • Interferes with a persons mental health and
    social development
  • Examples yelling, naming calling, put down

Physical Abuse
  • Inflicting bodily harm on someone
  • non accidental injury to another
  • Examples hitting, kicking, shaking

Facts
  • 3 million reported cases of child abuse in the US
    each year. They estimated the number is actually
    3 times greater
  • 1,500 children die every year from child abuse.
    About 4 children every day

Warning signs of emotional abuse
  • Loyalty to parents, fear of punishment,
  • Use of drugs/alcohol

Indicators of physical abuse
  • -Facial injuries
  • -Bruises, welts
  • -Bite marks, burns
  • -Fracture/lacerations
  • -Child wears torn,
  • Stained, or bloody
  • Clothes

Indicators of neglect
  • Malnutrition (weak, thin, fainting, dry skin)
  • Developmental delays in speech and motor skills
  • Height and weight below normal
  • Dirty, unkept, smells

Sexual abuse of a child
  • Any sexual act between an adult and child
  • Children who are sexually abused are 2.5 times
    more likely to abuse alcohol

  • Examples fondling, intercourse, pornography,
    prostitution
  • Warning signs stomach aches, nightmares,
    regression, trauma to body
  • Of reported rapes under the age of 12, 90 knew
    their perpetrator.

  • Aggressive in play, ignoring boundaries
  • Depressed
  • Hurtful to animals and small children
  • Complains of unexplained pains and aches
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Poor self image and self hatred
  • Delinquent behavior (stealing, vandalism)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Speech disorders

What to do
  • Suspicion is all that is needed
  • Call local law enforcement or child welfare
    agency
  • Information may be given anonymously
  • Name, gender, age, school, address is helpful to
    give

Teen Dating Violence Statistics
  • 1 in 5 high school girls is physically or
    sexually hurt by a dating partner

    relationship have told someone about it

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Victims of abuse can often suffer from this.
  • The victim will have nightmares and/or flashbacks
  • Other symptoms insomnia, helplessness,
    isolation, self-harm, substance abuse, avoid
    talking about it, feeling detached, explosive
    anger

  • They are brainwashed through mind control and
    manipulation
  • Believe violence is their fault
  • Inability to place responsibility for violence
    elsewhere
  • Fear for her life (or childrens lives)
  • Irrational belief that the abuser is omnipresent
  • Feel worthlessness and that they are not a good
    person
