What is a Spiritual Gift?

• Five basic principles about Spiritual Gifts
• Every child of God has a Spiritual Gift or Gifts
  (Eph 47-8)
• The Gifts of the Spirit are varied many (1Cor
  1214, 27)
• The Holy Spirit determines who gets what Gift (1
  Cor 1211)
• Spiritual Gifts are given to individuals to be
  used for the good of all members of the body (1
  Cor 127)
• God wants every disciple to know what their
  Spiritual Gift is and to use it in ministry (1
  Cor 1211 Pe 410)

What about apostleship?

• Is it a gift or an office?
• Was it a foundational gift (to establish the
  first century church) or is it an ongoing
  missionary gift for today?
• Ephesians 220 indicates the apostles had a
  unique functionhelping lay the foundation of the
  Church
• If for today, a person with this gift would be a
  cross-cultural church planter missionary

What about the sign gifts?

• The words used for tongues in the New Testament
  (glwssa, dialektos) refer to a known language or
  dialect
• Tongues had a specific purposeto convince
  unbelievers (1 Corinthians 1422)
• Tongues are to be communicated in an orderly
  manner (1 Corinthians 1427-28, 40)

What about the sign gifts?

• The New Testament indicates that the sign gifts
  would cease
• 1 Corinthians 138-10, when the perfect comes
• Hebrews 23-4, at the first . . . It was
  confirmed
• Progression of book of Acts, less emphasis on
  miracles and more emphasis on preaching
• However, it doesnt say when they would cease

So what are my Spiritual Gifts?

• Turn to page 6 in your Spiritual Gifts Assessment
  handout
• Respond to each question using the following
  scale
• 3 - Consistently, definitely true
• 2 - Most of the time, usually true
• 1 - Some of the time, once in a while
• 0 - Not at all, never
• Write down your response to each question in the
  corresponding box
• When done, add up each column and put in the
  Total row
• Answer according to who you are, not who you
  would like to be
• BE HONEST!!!
