Background on Tutu
  • Tutu was born on October 7th, 1931.
  • He was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa.
  • His parents raised him in a tolerant and
    sympathetic environment.
  • Desmond really wanted to be a physician but since
    his family couldnt afford to pay for his
    practice he couldnt become a physician.
  • So instead he followed his father and went into
    teaching.

School Background
  • Tutu went to college at Kings College in London.
    There he earned his Bachelors and Masters
    degree in Theology.
  • He then later on lectured in Lesotho at the
    National University of Lesotho.
  • Tutu then traveled to Europe to learn more and
    also talk at colleges.

Family Life
  • Tutu married his wife Leah Nomalizo Tutu in 1955
    and has been married ever since in their humble
    home.
  • Tutu had 4 kids, there names are Trevor, Theresa,
    Naomi and Mpho.

Nobel Peace Prize
  • Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
  • He was awarded the prize for his leading role in
    helping fix many problems in the apartheid in
    South Africa.

  • Then he later became archbishop of Cape Town for
    10 years (1986-1996).

Apartheid
  • The Apartheid was a system of racial segregation
    in 1948 in South Africa.
  • It took the rights of the Africans away.
  • They were treated horribly, and they were removed
    from their homes.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
  • TRC was a court-like type of operation which was
    established after the end of the Apartheid.
  • People who felt that they were victims of
    violence during the Apartheid could come to TRC
    and tell their story.
  • People who cause violence could also come forward
    and ask for forgiveness and not have any charges
    pressed.
  • The working at TRC went through three committees.
    Each committee dealt with different types of
    cases.
