km2. - The main district (Bonn) has an extension of
64.2 km2 , equivalent to the 45 of the city area.

6Geography and Climate
- Most of the area in the North Rhine-Westphalia is
covered with forest and fields. Bonn extends in
both sides of the River Rhine in a very flat area
surrounded by several hills. - The most known hill range formation is The
Siebengebirge (seven mountains) that is located
behind the city. - The Siebengebirge actually consists of more than
40 mountains and hills with his highest peak at
460 meters. - With 194.8 meters, the district Paffelsberg in
Beuel is the highest point of the city.

comparison with the rest of Germany, having a
range from -0.6 to 23.95 (Celcius). The rainfall
in Bonn is continuous during all the year varying

The Rhine divides the city in two parts, and it
has been a source of resources and a trade route
to other cities for centuries. Bonn has a main
bridge and scheduled boat trips to travel from
one side to the other.

8History
- Bonn began as a settlement of a Germanic tribe
known as the Ubians about 30 BC. and, after been
conquered by the Romans (In 11 BC), remained as
an important legionary fortress. - The garrison of Bonn probably switched sides at
the beginning of the fifth century, when the
Franks took possession of the Rhineland .

- During the medieval period, Bonnburg remained as
a Münster (center of a medieval town) until the
Normans devastated the land in the ninth century.
Bonn was also burned in 1198 and again in 1239.
In 1244 Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden of the
patricians of Cologne (A cathedral city, 30
miles from Bonn) ordered the construction of
surrounding walls and granted Bonns protection.

10Bonn in the 18th Century
During both World Wars, Bonn was captured by
Anglo-Canadian troops and later by French
troops. In 1949, after WWII, Bonn became the
provisional capital of West Germany due the
advocacy of the first Chancellor, Konrad
Adenauer. With the German Unification of 1990,
Berlin was declared capital again. The move to
the new capital was completed in 1999.
In 1794 Bonn became part of the Napoleonic Empire
after being seized by French troops. After the
fall of the French Empire (1815) Bonn was taken
by Prussia until the German Unification in 1871

- Bonn has a population of 314,299
(31/12/2006) with an average of
2,226/km² (5,764 /sq mi). - The principal religions are Protestant and Roman
Catholic. Bonn also has a considerable percentage
of Muslim Turkish immigrants . - The rate of unemployment is less than 5
- Over 27,000 people are university students (4,000
of them, from other countries)

Bonn (University of Bonn), founded in 1818, is
considered to be one of Germany's and indeed
Europe's most important universities. As home of
learning to over 27,000 students, they enjoy an
outstanding reputation both at home and abroad.
The University of Bonn is one of the world's
leading research based Universities operating on
an international level.

Deutsche Telekom AG., however, its subsidiary,

world-wide information via radio, TV and

Beethovenhaus
The main attraction on the city is the
Beethovenhaus, a place to see is youre a fan of
Beethoven compositions. The house is still
protected by the Beethoven family. The 150
original exhibits reflect Beethovens life and
works, and include his famous portrait and his
last grand piano.
