  • Be a Problem Solver
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Safe
  • We will strive to achieve excellence using the
engineering design process. Freeman Bears, GET

5
Morning Meeting
  • Teach, model, and practice school-wide
    expectations
  • Second step curriculum (try to align with the
    character trait of the month)
  • Community building activities

6
Why?
  • Consistency among all staff
  • Continuity for students and parents
  • Continuity for students throughout their
    elementary career
  • Clear management techniques for teacher
    assistants, substitute teachers, new teachers,
    volunteers, etc.

7
Bear System
  • All students will begin each day with 2 GREEN
    bears

8
Bear System
  • If a student misbehaves, they are given a
warning. If the misbehavior continues, the
student is moved to one GREEN bear

9
Bear System
  • If a student continues to misbehave, has been
    given another warning, and appropriate
interventions have been used to try to modify the
behavior he/she is moved to one YELLOW bear

10
Yellow Bear
  • When a student is moved to a yellow bear, he/she
must write an apology letter as soon as possible.
This letter is written to his/her parents or
    legal guardians.

Sample Letter 3-5
Date Dear (Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa), I am
writing this letter to let you know I did not
follow the School-wide Expectations today. At
the beginning of the year, I agreed to follow the
School-wide Expectations. This is what
happened (Student describes what happened) I
know I can and will do better to keep my
agreement with my teacher, classmates, and my
family to follow the School-wide Expectations.
This is what I will do to solve the problem I
had today (Student describes how they will solve
the problem) I am very sorry and promise to
follow the Rachel Freeman School of Engineering
School-wide Expectations. Your (son, daughter,
grandson, granddaughter), (Student

Apology Letters
  • Written by student
  • Must be signed by parent and returned to school
  • Letter is placed in student file
  • If letter is not returned the next day, phone
    call home
  • If letter is still not returned, it becomes a
    minor discipline referral

14
Bear System
  • If a student continues to display inappropriate
behavior, a warning has been given, and other
    appropriate interventions have not been
successful, the student is moved to a RED bear

15
Red Bear
  • When a student is moved to a RED bear, a
discipline referral form must be filled out. A
single-sheet form is used for MINOR behavior such
as moving to a RED bear.

16
Process for Getting the Green Bear Back Once It
Has Been Removed
  • STEP 1 The teacher asks the student what he/she
did wrong to lose the GREEN bear. The teacher
asks the student what he/she should have done.
If the student has difficulty knowing what he/she
should have done, the teacher models and explains
the correct behavior to the student.

17
Process for Getting the Green Bear Back Once It
Has Been Removed
  • STEP 2 After the student admits wrongdoing,
he/she must apologize to the teacher and whoever
was involved. The student offers to make amends.
This means he/she asks the teacher what they can
do to solve the problem. The teacher assists the
student with ideas for resolving the issue.

18
Process for Getting the Green Bear Back Once It
Has Been Removed
  • STEP 3 Once the student displays sustained
    engagement in demonstrating the appropriate
behavior, he/she earns back the GREEN bear. If
the student is successful, the apology letter is
not sent home. The goal is to get the student
back on track as quickly as possible.

Office Referrals
  • An office referral may be made in two ways
  • After 3 minor behavior discipline referrals have
    been written
  • When a major behavior occurs

25
Further explanation of 1
  • Minor behavior discipline referrals should be
written when a student stays on a RED BEAR or
when a minor behavior has occurred. The minor
behavior discipline referrals should be written
on single-sheet discipline referral forms (as
    opposed to triplicate forms).

26
  • When a student has had 3 minor behavior
discipline referrals written, an office referral
is made. This referral should be written on a
triplicate discipline referral form. Copies of
the 3 minor discipline referrals must be
    attached. Any additional documentation to
support the referral may also be attached.

27
Discipline Referral Form
  • Discipline Referral Form.doc

28
Further explanation of 2
  • When a major behavior occurs, a major behavior
discipline referral form should be filled out
using the triplicate form. A major behavior
immediately results in an office referral. If
the student is in crisis, the staff member should
call the office to have the student removed.
Otherwise, the major behavior discipline form
should be given to the administration as soon as
    possible.
