Student Description of Design Process The
Pavilion
  •
  • Forward To better understand this body of work,
I felt it was necessary to write a few words on
    each of the
  • Design Studios major design
    problems.
  •  Site
  • q       I chose a site in Point Pleasant Park,
between two existing naval monuments as a place
    to reflect on the
  • sacrifices made by Merchant Marines
during war time. My intention was to create a
    place that would be
  • harmonious with its surroundings, and
that would inspire people to think of the past
    and to the future.
  •  Path
  • o        Winding stone path (chaos within order).
Signifies German U-boats within the protective
    formation of the
  • merchant convoys.
  •  Base
  • o        Raised concrete, land meets sea, a space
defined by elevation. Matches existing concrete
    structures that
  • border on the site.
  •  Wall
  • o        Winding, a continuation of stone path,
constructed using early 1900s ship building
    techniques. Steel plates on
  • each side with the names of ships and
crew lost at sea. The wall is in varying stages
    of deconstruction, as it
  • would look at the bottom of the sea,
some openings would be large enough to pass
    through.
