    will catch it.
  • You will also need to research survival
techniques and the climate as well as geography
    of Africa.
  • All of your research must come together in the
form of a report describing your adventure and
    how you survived.
  • Include a picture of your animal as well as a
picture of where you will be traveling in Africa
    (a photograph or drawing).
  • Your report should include 5 paragraphs.
  • Use the information you already know about
    developing paragraphs.
  • You may use Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word,
    dictionaries, encyclopedias, and National
    Geographic Magazines.

Introduction (Teacher)
  • This lesson was developed for students to use as
a unique way of learning about science and how to
organize their ideas in a short report using
    Microsoft Word.
  • The lesson deals with each student completing a
five paragraph report on a certain animal from
the Africa jungle, how they captured it, and how
they survived their adventure. They must also
find or draw a picture of the animal as well as a
picture of the environment in which they captured
    that animal.

11
Learners (Teacher)
  • This lesson was developed for a fourth grade
classroom. It targets the subjects of science and
language arts. The lesson can easily be extended
to additional grades and subjects as well.
  • Prior to the lesson, learners will need to know
basic computer skills, how to use Microsoft Word,
how develop paragraphs, and how to search the
web. However, they may need teacher assistance to
    review these skills.

12
Standards (Teacher)
  • As a result of this lesson, students will learn
how to search the web for information, more about
Africa and its animals, and will also review on
how to write a report using five well developed
    paragraphs.
  • Science Standards are addressed in this lesson as
    well as Language Arts Standards.
  • Students will learn how to organize information,
use their imaginations to write a fictional story
in the first person point of view, and express
their own individual creativity in their survival
techniques, by what animal they choose, and how
they choose to catch that animal.
  • Language Arts Education Standards grades K-12
  • The students learn how to write five paragraph
    reports.
  • Evaluating and organizing information is taught.
  • Applying knowledge of language structure,
punctuation, spelling, and grammar is used in
    their report.
  • Applying language skills to create a purpose for
writing is taught. The students are required to
share information and facts, express personal
ideas in their five paragraph report.
  • Science Education Standards for grades K-4
  • The students learn life science by exploring
environments different than the one they live in
    with different types of animals.
  • The students explore different personal and
social perspectives by trying to survive in the
    African jungle environment.

13
Process 1 (Teacher)
  • This is the process description given to the
students to complete this project. The students
are also given links to different websites to
explore that are not included in the description
    of the process below.
  • First choose which animal you are going to
capture for the African Jungle Zoo. Use the links
    provided to help you decide.
  • You will need to research this animal so that you
will know how and where to catch it. For help on

  • You will need to include your capturing technique
    in your report.
  • Next, list items that you must bring in order to
survive. Click here for help getting your thought
process started. Search the web for photographs
of your animal and where it lives
  • If you do not want to use a photograph, you may
    also use a drawing.
  • Keep in mind if you do not want to be limited to
only use the websites provided, feel free to
search the web on your own using Google Search
and typing in key words of what you are looking
    for.
  • For example you could go to google and search for
the word Africa. Then choose from the websites
available to explore. Be prepared to share your
    pictures with the class.
  • Once you have gathered your information, you can
organize your thoughts and research into a five
paragraph report. If you need to review how to
organize and set up paragraphs in the form of a
report, use the link provided as a guide.
  • You may also use dictionaries, encyclopedias,
    National Geographic or other educational
    magazines (consult with your teacher).
  • Your report should be typed in Microsoft Word and
    SAVED before printing.
  • Your end product should include a picture,
drawing, or photograph of the animal you captured
for the African Jungle Zoo, a picture and brief
description of where you stayed (location), and a
    five paragraph essay.
  • All of these materials must be presented to the
class. You will not be required to read your
entire report but instead a short summary (so
    make sure you practice!)
  • Good Luck! Have fun! And be careful surviving the
    African jungle!!

14
Process 2 (Teacher)
  • At least one teacher must be present to oversee
this project. Students may have questions
concerning how to use the computers.
  • A novice teacher could use this assignment. It is
thoroughly explained and students should be able
to use it without experiencing too many
    difficulties.
  • Each student must have access to their own
computer to complete this lesson. A computer lab
can also be used for this assignment .
  • This project will probably take approximately a
week of class time, during the science or
language arts (or both) period of the day.
  • Students will not be able to work on this
assignment at home if they do not have access to
    computers or PowerPoint. Therefore, students
should be provided with plenty of class time.

15
Process 3 (Teacher)
  • Variations The lesson could also be used as a
group assignment for younger students. The roles
    could be divided into
  • writer of the report
  • researcher
  • photographer
  • presenter
  • Students would work together and consult with
one another when/if they run into problems. Using
the lesson as a group assignment would also help
the students practice teamwork and getting along
with one another. However, this would also make
    grading more difficult.

16
Resources (Teacher)
  • Materials needed
  • A class set of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and
    National Geographic magazines
  • Microsoft Word
  • Internet Explorer
  • PowerPoint
  • Google.com
  • How To Write A Five Paragraph Report
  • At least one teacher should be present during
this project to answer questions on how to search
the web, use Microsoft Word, or to review what
the students already know about writing complete
    paragraphs.
  • A field trip to a Zoo would be an excellent idea
    after completion of this project!

17
Evaluation (Teacher)
  • When evaluating this lesson, teachers should take
into consideration the quality of the students
report, their use of class time, the effort that
went into their work, the quality of pictures,
and the thoroughness of their presentations.
  • Student Evaluation printable rubric form.

18
Conclusions (Teacher)
  • This lesson is a fun way to help children learn
to explore the web on their own.
  • The material is organized in such a way that the
students think that they are playing a game
    rather than doing actual work.
  • The children will have a chance to put their
    imaginations to work.
  • Students will build on their knowledge of animals
and learn interesting facts that that may not
have known or ever thought of before.
  • Students will also build on their writing, and
    organizational skills.
  • Other students will benefit from listening to the
discoveries and interesting new facts from their
    classmates presentations.
