3TYPE 1 DIABETES
Type 1 diabetes, also called insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus, is an auto immune disease in
which the body destroys insulin producing cells.
As a result, the body cannot effectively store
and use glucose (sugar) as an energy source.
People with type 1 diabetes must inject
themselves with synthetic insulin 1 to 4 times a
day.
4TYPE 2 DIABETES
In type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset
diabetes, the body can still produce insulin, but
its ineffective. Thus the body, like with type 1
diabetes, cannot effectively store and use
glucose as an energy source. Insulin injections
are not required.
5How Do You Get Diabetes?
- Heredity
- Viral infection
- Being overweight
6Who's at Risk?
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Children or teens who have a genetic
predisposition to diabetes - Exposure to viral infection
- Type 2 Diabetes
- People of all ages who are overweight
- Adults who have some genetic predisposition to
diabetes
7Symptoms of Diabetes
8Treatment of Diabetes
- Daily insulin injections
- Diet
- Exercise
- Oral Hypoglycemic drugs
9Equipment Required to Maintain
Good Diabetes Control
- Glucometer
- Insulin
- Syringes
- Glucose Tablets/Juice Box
10Alternate Treatments
- Type 2 None other than those already
mentioned - Type 1 Insulin Pump Therapy
11What is an Insulin Pump?
An insulin pump is a portable device that injects
insulin at programmed intervals in order to
regulate blood sugar levels. No needles
necessary!!
12How the Pump Works
- A little piece of plastic or canula is inserted
with a needle underneath the skin - The needle is removed and a piece of protective
tape is placed over the infusion set - Pump and Canula are then primed and are ready
for use
