  • II Samuel 12 David told of his sin.

3
Nathans Great Word Picture
  • (2 Sam 121 - 2 NKJV) Then the LORD sent Nathan
to David. And he came to him, and said to him
"There were two men in one city, one rich and the
other poor. 2 "The rich man had exceedingly
    many flocks and herds.

4
The Poor Mans Lamb
  • (2 Sam 123 NKJV) "But the poor man had nothing,
except one little ewe lamb which he had bought
and nourished and it grew up together with him
and with his children. It ate of his own food and
drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom and
it was like a daughter to him.

5
The Rich Man has a Visitor
  • (2 Sam 124 NKJV) "And a traveler came to the
rich man, who refused to take from his own flock
and from his own herd to prepare one for the
wayfaring man who had come to him but he took
the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man
    who had come to him."

6
Death Penalty Time!
  • (2 Sam 125 NKJV) So David's anger was greatly
aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan,
"As the LORD lives, the man who has done this
    shall surely die!

7
Hell Restore fourfold
  • (2 Sam 126 NKJV) "And he shall restore fourfold
for the lamb, because he did this thing and
    because he had no pity."

8
"You are the man!
  • (2 Sam 127 NKJV) Then Nathan said to David,
"You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of
Israel 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I
delivered you from the hand of Saul.

9
I gave you . . . !
  • (2 Sam 128 NKJV) 'I gave you your master's
house and your master's wives into your keeping,
and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And
if that had been too little, I also would have
    given you much more!

10
God tells it like it is!
  • (2 Sam 129 NKJV) 'Why have you despised the
commandment of the LORD, to do evil in His sight?
  • You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword
  • you have taken his wife to be your wife,
  • and have killed him with the sword of the people
    of Ammon.

11
Punishment 1 the sword!
  • (2 Sam 1210 NKJV) 'Now therefore, the sword
shall never depart from your house, because you
have despised Me, and have taken the wife of
Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'

12
The sword shall not depart from thy house.
  • The expression thy house, however, does not
refer to the house of David as continued in his
descendants, but simply as existing under David
himself until it was broken up by his death. The
fulfilment of this threat commenced with the
murder of Amnon by Absalom (2Sa_1329) it was
continued in the death of Absalom the rebel
(2Sa_1814), and was consummated in the execution
    of Adonijah (1Ki_224-25).

13
Punishment 2 your wives!
  • (2 Sam 1211 NKJV) "Thus says the LORD 'Behold,
I will raise up adversity against you from your
own house and I will take your wives before your
eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall
lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

14
Punishment Begins to Fall
  • Judgments which fell upon his house commenced
with Amnon's incest, whilst Absalom's rebellion
culminated in the open violation of his father's
concubines, and even Adonijah lost his life,
simply because he asked for Abishag the
Shunammite, who had lain in David's bosom to warm
and cherish him in his old age (1Ki_223-24).

15
The Punishment Increased.
  • (2 Sam 1212 NKJV) 'For you did it secretly, but
I will do this thing before all Israel, before
    the sun.'"

16
What does forgiveness Include?
  • (2 Sam 1213 NKJV) So David said to Nathan, "I
have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to
David, "The LORD also has put away your sin you
    shall not die.

17
I have sinned against the Lord.
  • The words are very few, just as in the case of
the publican in the Gospel of Luke (Luk_1813).
But that is a good sign of a thoroughly broken
spirit ... There is no excuse, no cloaking, no
palliation of the sin. There is no searching for
a loophole, ... no pretext put forward, no human
weakness pleaded. He acknowledges his guilt
    openly, candidly, and without prevarication
    (Berleb. Bible). -- Keil-Delitzsch

18
What about Forgiveness?
  • (2 Sam 1214 NKJV) "However, because by this
deed you have given great occasion to the enemies
of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is
born to you shall surely die."

19
the child also shall surely die."
  • (2 Sam 1215 NKJV) Then Nathan departed to his
house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's
wife bore to David, and it became ill.

20
David Pleaded with God
  • (2 Sam 1216 NKJV) David therefore pleaded with
God for the child, and David fasted and went in
and lay all night on the ground.

21
He cannot be moved!
  • (2 Sam 1217 NKJV) So the elders of his house
arose and went to him, to raise him up from the
ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food
    with them.

22
Day 7 the child dies!
  • (2 Sam 1218 NKJV) Then on the seventh day it
came to pass that the child died. And the
servants of David were afraid to tell him that
the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while
the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he
would not heed our voice. How can we tell him
that the child is dead? He may do some harm!"

23
David figures it out!
  • (2 Sam 1219 NKJV) When David saw that his
servants were whispering, David perceived that
the child was dead. Therefore David said to his
servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He
    is dead."

24
Its Over!
  • (2 Sam 1220 NKJV) So David arose from the
ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed
his clothes and he went into the house of the
LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own
house and when he requested, they set food
    before him, and he ate.

25
Please Explain!
  • (2 Sam 1221 NKJV) Then his servants said to
him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted
and wept for the child while he was alive, but
when the child died, you arose and ate food."

26
The Explanation
  • (2 Sam 1222 NKJV) And he said, "While the child
was alive, I fasted and wept for I said, 'Who
can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me,
    that the child may live?'

27
Who Can Tell?
  • (Jonah 34 NKJV) And Jonah began to enter the
city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out
and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be
    overthrown!"
  • Where is any hope extended?
  • Where is any suggestion that repentance would
    help at this point?
  • We know God spared the city.

28
For Us
  • Without going into detail of all the passages, I
believe terrible things will happen before the
Lord returns, but here is part of what he says
  • (Luke 2136 NKJV) "Watch therefore, and pray
always that you may be counted worthy to escape
all these things that will come to pass, and to
stand before the Son of Man."

29
Now its over!
  • (2 Sam 1223 NKJV) "But now he is dead why
should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I
shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

30
David comforts Bathsheba
  • (2 Sam 1224 NKJV) Then David comforted
Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay
with her. So she bore a son, and he called his
name Solomon. Now the LORD loved him,

31
Nathan Goes to David
  • (2 Sam 1225 NKJV) and He sent word by the hand
of Nathan the prophet So he called his name
    Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

32
The Wars Continue
  • (2 Sam 1226 NKJV) Now Joab fought against
Rabbah of the people of Ammon, and took the royal
    city.

33
Rabbah is just above the name Ammon
34
Victory for Israel
  • (2 Sam 1227 NKJV) And Joab sent messengers to
David, and said, "I have fought against Rabbah,
and I have taken the city's water supply.

35
I have taken the city's water supply.
  • Some feel this is a bit out of chronological
order and may have taken place a short time after
    Uriah was killed.
  • If that is true, it means God gave Israel a great
    victory even before Davids repentance.
  • God is often good to us even when there are
    things we need to correct.

36
Joab calls David to Return to Battle.
  • (2 Sam 1228 NKJV) "Now therefore, gather the
rest of the people together and encamp against
the city and take it, lest I take the city and it
    be called after my name."

37
encamp against the city, and take it
  • It has always been characteristic of Oriental
despots to monopolize military honors and as the
ancient world knew nothing of the modern
refinement of kings gaining victories by their
generals, so Joab sent for David to command the
final assault in person. A large force was levied
for the purpose. David without much difficulty
captured the royal city and obtained possession
of its immense wealth. -- JFB

38
David Returns to Battle
  • (2 Sam 1229 NKJV) So David gathered all the
people together and went to Rabbah, fought
    against it, and took it.

39
David takes Rabbah
  • (2 Sam 1230 NKJV) Then he took their king's
crown from his head. Its weight was a talent of
gold, with precious stones. And it was set on
David's head. Also he brought out the spoil of
    the city in great abundance.

40
How Much is a Talent?
  • The true value of the talent cannot well be
ascertained, but it is known that it was
different among different nations. The Attic
Talent, the weight, contained 60 Attic minae, or
6000 Attic drachmae, equal to 56 pounds, eleven
    ounces,

41
David Basically enslaved Ammon
  • (2 Sam 1231 NKJV) And he brought out the people
who were in it, and put them to work with saws
and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross
over to the brick works. So he did to all the
cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all
    the people returned to Jerusalem.

What did we Learn?
  • Sin may be forgiven, but the scars may long
    remain.

What did we Learn?
  • Sin may be forgiven, but the scars may long

  • Prayer is always appropriate, but sometimes it
will not change Gods design or plan.
