4. Appeals
  • Certain effects a story has on the reader if the
reader has understood it very well.
  • Sometimes you read a passage and you laugh, cry
or hiss for hate and disgust.
  • Four types of appeals
  • Auditory, Emotional, Intellectual and Gustatory

9
Auditory appeal
  • An appeal to your sense of hearing e.g. when a
poem is read aloud to you, the effects of the end
rhymes, assonance give an auditory appeal.

10
Emotional appeal
  • Has to do totally with feelings e.g. crying,
hissing out anger, burst out laughing.
  • Emotional effects are also very much alive in
    watching films and plays.

11
Intellectual appeal
  • A passage may make you think of things and ideas
which have never come to your mind. It may make
meanings, problems and prospects of life clear to
    you.
  • Intellectual appeal also sets your mind in motion
long after you have read a story or seen a play.

12
Gustatory appeal
  • An appeal to the sense of smell e.g. you read a
passage and the odour of some stinking things or
aroma of sweet flower are brought to your nose.
  • Ayi Kwei Armah-Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born.
The description of the saliva of the sleeping
conductor. It makes one feel sick.
