2Mapping Between Requirements Viewpoints
Operational Tasks
3Requirements Structuring - Semantics and Syntax
- Standard Rules for Requirements Definition
- Requirements must be explicit - will form part of
contract - Requirements must be consistent - no
contradictions and express the capability
required - Requirements must be quantifiable - avoid
underachieving or over achieving - Requirements must be verifiable - to enable
acceptance

Diesel Fuel DDD Part 4.2 - 5 Supply Fuel
Functional Description Diesel Fuel DDD Part 4.3
-1 Functional Interfaces
Store containing the individual Control and
status demands made on the Information System
Process Specification for Provide Fuel Supply
The process takes clean fuel from the ships
service tanks (STORED_SERVICE_DIESEL_FUEL) and by
means of pumps and a piped distribution system to
supply main generators, boilers, incinerator,
emergency generators etc., via (DIESEL_FUEL).
Remote control of the pumps and valves will be
via flow (Remote_Control) messages and the status
will be monitored via flow (Remote_Status). In
the event of a loss of remote control or
maintenance, manual control of the pumps and
valves is represented by flow (Local_Control) and
the visual indications or valve positions via
flow (Local_Status). Electrical power at 440v
60Hz is supplied via (LV_ELECTRICITY).

8Functional Modelling
- What is it - develop abstract representations of
system from different viewpoints to aid
understanding - Benefits
- support requirements analysis through providing
structure and assisting in completeness and
consistency checking - represent required capability and potential
design solutions - support mapping between viewpoints, capability
and design - provide framework to assess suitability of
candidate design solution - provide basis for definition of design solution,
through architecture, sub-system specification
and interface specifications - Analysis started early in lifecycle prior to
commitment to costly solution - Provides basis to investigate integration
problems - Provide basis for trials and acceptance
definition - Framework in which to investigate upgrades
9Requirements Trade-off and Decision Support
- Complex process dependencies exist between
scenarios, requirements, and architectures where
all are developed through stages of maturity
together
Scenarios
Trade-off requirement satisfaction against
architecture (cost, time) for different system
scenarios
Requirements
Architectures
time
- Requirements re-assessed through life of project
- Therefore needs to be managed through appropriate
processes - Traceability and links established
- Consistency and completeness checking
- Appropriate use of Requirements Database
10Design Services - System Engineering
Provides expertise supporting the whole project
lifecycle, from developing an understanding of
the customers initial requirements, through to
proof of delivery of a solution that meets the
stated needs.
