5 Cultural Views of Addiction
  • 1. Addiction as Sin Willful Misbehavior
  • Solution Punish the Addict
  • 2. Addiction as Disease
  • Solution Treat the Addict with 12 Step Based
    Treatment
  • 3. Addiction as Maladaptive Behavior
  • Solution Treat and teach the addict pro-social
    Adaptive Behaviors and Skills

4
Maladaptive Behavior
  • Cocaine addicts are thought to select cocaine for
relief from depression, boredom, or emptiness.
Cocaine bolsters feelings of self-esteem and
    assertiveness.
  • CONCRETIZATION
  • Clients do not articulate their feelings. This is
considered normal for children and young
    adolescents.
  • In chemically dependent adults it is considered a
    developmental lag.
  • When you start using the lag begins. Stop using
you start developing from that point.

5
5 Cultural Views of Addiction(Cont.) 2
Non-Western Views
  • 4. Addiction is Life out of Balance
    Koyanisqatsii ko.yaa.nis.katski (Hopi) n. 1.
Crazy life. 2. Life in turmoil. 3. Life
disintegrating. 4. Life out of balance. 5. A
state of life that calls for another way of
    living.
  • Solution
  • Emotional Healing of Multigenerational Trauma.
  • Cultural Practices that restore a Spiritual
Balance and Right Relationship Tobacco as
Sacrament vs Tobacco as Addiction, Tipi
    Medicine Meetings,
  • The Little Smoke as an Ally vs. Counter-cultural
    Prozac

6
5 Cultural Views of Addiction(Cont.) 2
Non-Western Views
  • 5. Addiction as Weapon Addiction to legal and
illegal drugs is profitable. Addiction is Slavery
    (African-American)
  • Solution Active Spiritually Based Resistance
against the ism based cultures which promote
    addiction, co-dependency. Promote self,
    cultural,historical, spiritual, and interpersonal
knowledge skills, and abilities which develop
    self-sufficiency, interdependency, cultural
    proficiency, economic and political independence.

7
Addiction is Slavery
  • There are a number of community organization
efforts that have made a connection between
    addiction and slavery.
  • These efforts emphasize the connection between
    economics, addiction, institutional racism, and
social control. Generally they promote cultural
    empowerment strategies.

8
XII. La Cultura Cura Cultures the Healing
Stuff.
  • For certain cultural groups being born in America
or coming to America increases addiction risk.
  • Practicing cultural protective factors greatly
    reduces problems.
  • Some of these factors can be adapted outside of
    their originating culture
  • (Culturally Validated Best Practices)

9
Physically, Then Mentally
  • We have seen the physical reasons for addiction
    within the brain.
  • There might be a natural balance created by the
    DNA code.
  • That balance gets changed with exposure to
    chemicals or other environmental pressures.
  • Weve looked at the Hardware of the Brain
  • Now we look at the Software of the Mind

11
Psychology Basics
  • Western Psychology
  • Depends on the basic theories laid down by
Sigmund Freud and his student Carl Jung. Freuds
talking cure and Jungs conceptions of the
conscious and unconscious mind laid the
    groundwork for others to follow.
  • Id, Ego, Super Ego,
  • Conscious, Collective Unconscious, Archetypes are
    all types of memes.

12
Basic Memetics
13
Types of Memes
  • Distinction Memes
  • Category, Label
  • Strategy Memes
  • Situational Cause Effect Beliefs
  • If ...... Then
  • Example
  • Driving Red Light/Right Turn Stop, then turn.
  • Four way stop wait for all cars ahead, then go.
  • Traffic Circle, go counter clockwise
  • See a cop, slow down!
  • Drive casually.
  • Association Memes
  • Link two or more memes
  • Smell of wind on water
  • Sunlight on grass, sand, rock, skin
  • Flag, Military, American, Winner, The Best

14
Types of Memes
  • ADVERTISING MEMES
  • Mom, apple pie, baseball, hot dogs, Chevrolet
  • Sexy men, Diet Coke
  • Sexy women, beer, computers, cars
  • Joe Camel, youth rebellion, smoking
  • HEALTH MEMES
  • Good Hygiene
  • Safe Sex
  • Proper Diet
  • Rest / Exercise

15
Self Medication vs Intrapersonal Intelligence
  • Intrapersonal Intelligence
  • Understanding yourself your internal world,
    emotions, intellect, intuition, inspiration,
depression, anger. - Howard Gardeners Theory of
    Multiple Intelligence.

16
Gardeners Multiple Intelligences
  • 1. LINGUISTICAL
  • 2. LOGICAL MATHEMATICAL
  • 3. MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE
  • 4. KINESTHETIC - GROSS/FINE MOTOR ACTIVITY
  • 5. INTERPERSONAL - People Skills
  • 6. INTRAPERSONAL - Self Knowledge Skills
  • 7. SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE - Perception-Recall-Reprod
uction of images, memories, Directional sense
    Position in space. Puzzle solving

17
Culturally Valid Best Practices
  • 1st things first
  • 1. Clean Sober
  • 2. Emotional world.
  • 3. Drugs as feelings why drugs stop
    workingTolerance.
  • 4. Culturally appropriate tools in addition to
Talking Cure. What is it you talk about?
  • You cant teach what you dont know.
  • You cant lead where you dont go.

24
The Trouble With Normal
  • The trouble with normal is that not everybody
    isnormal.
  • Continuing on from where we left off
  • And what I forgot to tell you
  • First what I forgot.
  • FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)
  • FAE (Fetal Alcohol Effects)
  • FADE (Fetal Alcohol and Other Drug Effects)

25
Normal?
  • Chemically Compromised Infants / Perinatal Class
  • Whatever Mom drugs mom does, baby does at least
twice as much of because only mom has the liver.
  • Teratogens (Makes Monsters) Meth, Coke, ETOH
  • Mutagens (Changes DNA Codes) Radioactivity,
    Alcohol in Dad
  • Other Drugsdata aint great or always
    conclusive.
  • Basic issue with the Talking Cure is it assumes
    normality.
  • Normality itself depends on optimum physical
conditionsAssume normality in our 3 stories

28
Emotional Equations
  • (A - E)n D
  • Anger denied expression multiplied becomes
    depression.
  • Depression is Painful
  • D P
  • (D)n
  • Depression multiplied must be transformed or
    various addictive behaviors can develop.
  • Pn x AB PAB
  • Pain multiplied and not transformed will induce
addictive behavior or painful addictive behavior.

29

Conditioning Theory
  • In Which the Question is Asked and Answered Do
People have to be Slaves to Forces they neither
    Understand or Control?
  • No, They Can be Free.
  • How? One might Ask.

37
Human Services 200 Understanding
AddictiveBehavior
  • Winter Term 2004
  • Week 5
  • Day 2 Thursday 2/5/04
  • Conditioning Theories

38
Theoretically
  • We looked before at emotional vocabulary
  • We looked at a construct for describing the
counseling process as traveling through barriers
    down through a well.
  • Now we look as a behaviorist looks at psychology.
  • Marks bias I aint a behaviorist, Im a
    transpersonalist.
  • Behaviorist model is mechanistic / materialistic.
  • There is no real room for spirituality within it.
  • It does work very well if you need simplicity.
  • You can easily reproduce it in a laboratory.

39
Theoretically..
  • Respondent Conditioning
  • Operant Conditioning
  • Tension Reduction Hypothesis
  • Blood Alcohol Discrimination
  • Natural Mind (Synthesis of Pre-Addictive
    Societies)

40
Theoretically..
  • Respondent Conditioning
  • Well Defined Stimulus, reflex, habit which
    precedes behavior Response.
  • (Pavlov's Dogs) Bell preceding food, produces
    salivation. Obsessive Compulsive Behavior Think/
    Do.
  • Stimuli are Addictive Triggers.Euphoric
Recall (Good Trips) At least all you can
    remember is the good parts.
  • And Why Are Fire Engines Red?

41
Fire Engines are Red Because
  • Fire Engines have 3 Ladders 4 FireFighters
  • 3 x 4 12
  • 12 inches in a ruler
  • Queen Elizabeth was a ruler
  • She had ships that Sailed the Sea
  • In the Sea there are Fish
  • Fish have fins
  • The Finns fought the Russians
  • Fire Engines are Red cause they are always
    Rushin

42
Things Are Addictive Because
  • We Want to Feel Good
  • If One is Good, More is Better
  • As a rule one more cant hurt
  • If I dont know it cant hurt me
  • If Im three sheets to the wind, I dont know
    where I been
  • If I feel no pain, Ill probly go there again
  • D.A.R.E. Drugs Are Really Expensive!
  • Having Expensive things means Im Successful!
  • Im Rushin to the top o the heap, just cant
stop to thinkwhat exactly Im losing and what I
    got.
  • Memory is Associative, even if the associations
make no logical sense, they have a goalBrain
    reward.
  • The Brain can be rewarded by Being Still.
  • Stillness and Tranquility Set things in Order in
the Universe - Tao Te Ching

43
Theoretically..
  • Operant Conditioning appears voluntary. Behavior
is conditioned by a reinforcer which occurs after
    behavior.
  • Addiction Operantly conditioned response which
becomes stronger with quality, number, and size
of reinforcements following each ingestion. (Or
    repetition of Process)
  • Reinforcements
  • 1. Euphoria
  • 2. Social Variables (Peer Acceptance)
  • 3. Elimination of Withdrawal Sickness
  • (Or Craving if there is no Withdrawal)

44
Theoretically and Realistically
  • Operant Conditioning Appears voluntary.
  • Behavior is also conditioned by environmental
    reinforcers called advertising, or association
memes which influence behavior in those who are
not conscious, and do not shield or immediately
    disinfect.
  • Addiction Operantly conditioned response which
becomes stronger with quality, number, and size
    of reinforcements following each ingestion,
repetition of addictive process, or environments
conducive to both casino, chat room, bar, party,
    restaurant.
  • Reinforcements
  • 1. Euphoria
  • 2. Social Variables (Peer Acceptance)
  • 3. Elimination of Withdrawal Sickness
  • (Or Satisfaction of Craving if there is no
    Withdrawal)
  • Craving is a persistent and repetitive thought.

45
Theoretically..
  • Tension Reduction Hypothesis (Jellinek)
  • Society causes tension, tension is painful, pain
    demands relief.
  • That Demand creates two problems
  • A. Reduce tension creating conditions
  • B. Find mode of relief for tension
  • External Locus of Control Find Solutions Outside
  • Internal Locus of Control Inquire Within, Rely
on Internal Solutions and coping skills.

46
Theoretically..
  • Blood Alcohol Discrimination
  • Silverstein et al (1974)
  • Non-alcoholics able to discern BAL's using
internal cues, which are accurate. Assuming of
course they are in touch enough with their bodies
    to be aware of that.
  • Sensorium sensorium n
  • 1. the sensory components of the brain and
nervous system that deal with the receiving and
    interpreting of external stimuli
  • all the sensory functions in the body, considered
    as a single unit

47
Theoretically..
  • Alcoholics are generally unable to accurately
gauge internal cues. (Lack of Body Awareness)
  • IM NOT AS THINK AS YOU DRUNK I AM!
  • (Due to tolerance and conditioning towards binge
    drinking)
  • Buzzed Changes due to tolerance.
  • Must use external cues i.e. body weight, of
    drinks.
  • Generally Abstinence works better than moderation
    in the U.S.
  • In Europe, Moderation is called Controlled
    Drinking.
  • Controlled Drinking doesnt seem to have the same
cultural supports here. (EX Swedish Alcohol
    Policy Model)

48
Comparing Alcohol Policy Models
  • Swedish Alcohol Policy
  • Government Monopoly
  • No In-Country Advertising
  • No Sales on Weekends
  • Legally Drunk .04 with stiff sanctions
  • Drinking Age 18, 16 with an adult relative at
    dinner
  • American Alcohol Policy
  • Govt Regulated Private Business
  • Regulations vary state to state
  • Illegal to drink below 21
  • Not illegal to market to below 21
  • Legally drunk .08

49
7 oz Microbrew
3 - 4 oz Fortified Wine
Suppose we taught people this How much
difference could it make?
50
Blood Alcohol Discrimination
Is .02 Reasonable? Is staying under .08
achievable? It isIf you value sobriety over
intoxication.
51
How do you value Sobriety over Intoxication?
  • How would you condition someone for sobriety?
  • The social assumption is that you are supposed to
    be soberbut
  • As a number of Social Recons have noted
  • The pressure is everywhere to use.
  • How would you push back?

52
Natural Mind
  • Natural Mind The state of being in which the
inherent potential in each human being can
develop, grow, be sustained, and expanded by
    conscious choice.

53
Natural Mind
54
Natural Mind
  • These are separated only to talk about them. In a
healthy and aware person they work together in
    balance.
  • Spirit is the real experience of connection to
something greater than yourself. Referred to in
    at least two ways
  • 1. Silent Compassionate Witness
  • 2. Still Small Voice Within
  • (Your own Personal Intuition It is always True
and Correct, Ya Know Ya shoulda listened!)

55
Human Services 200 Understanding
AddictiveBehavior
  • Winter Term 2004
  • Week 6
  • Day 1 Tuesday 2/10/04
  • Sexual Addictions / Internet Addiction Readings

56
Natural Mind
  • These are separated only to talk about them. In a
healthy and aware person they work together in
    balance.
  • Spirit is the real experience of connection to
something greater than yourself. Referred to in
    at least two ways
  • 1. Silent Compassionate Witness
  • 2. Still Small Voice Within
  • (Your own Personal Intuition It is always True
and Correct, Ya Know Ya shoulda listened!)

57
Natural Mind
  • Emotions include your feelings, your dreams
  • Your Body is where you live while conscious.
(Where are you when you are not conscious?)
  • Mind includes your thoughts, theories,
memories, drives, ego-programming (I am this
body, these feelings, these thoughts, this
history and no more) and visions of the future.

58
Natural Mind
  • The Problem is Choice
  • Do you accept that you have made or will make
    certain choices?
  • One of those choices is Who You Are?
  • Are the circumstances of your life chosen by you
    or inflicted upon you?
  • Poor in Wallet is not the same as Poor in Spirit?

59
Natural Mind
  • These are separated only to talk about them. In a
healthy and aware person they work together in
    balance.
  • Spirit connects your Mind, Emotions, Body, beyond
the limits imposed by the Ego.
  • Originally you werent addicted and were
    connected and self-reliant.
  • When did you Stop?
  • Start by Balancing

60
Natural Mind
  • A Balance is Achieved where the Inner World
remains unchanged regardless of the outer world.
  • The outer world can be influenced by this
  • Soul Force (As King referred to it.)

61
Natural Mind
  • In the beginning of your life you begin to learn
to separate yourself from your environment and
    form an identity.
  • A baby learns about object permanence, expresses
emotions, acquires language and learning, learns
to eat, walk, and use its body.

A point is an experience, an emotion, a memory,
points added together make a line.
A line is series of points, some of which are
related, some of which may be "off the wall", or
lead to other lines.
62
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • People have experiences along all four lines.

These experiences can be deepened and a greater
range of them can be explored.
63
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • The next dimension beyond this allows one to
"see", perceive, or feel, and therefore
manipulate, the forces which shape our feelings,
body image and wellness, our mental health, and
    our spiritual being.
  • Beyond what can be pictured here in
two-dimensional space are yet other sources of
    learning and influence.

64
Dimensions of Natural Mind Simplex
  • Each higher dimension contains all the lower ones
within it. If you use this as a metaphor for
    human development
  • A point of view which can only see points close
to it. Or a line of thought which can only see
    adjacent lines and points.

A line can see other lines and points, but not
squares and complex structures.
The Point being In Addiction ones attention is
focused on a single point or line to the
exclusion of others.
65
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • The Counselor sees the original sober person at
the heart of the suffering addict.
  • Healing is the process of bringing that being to
    the surface.
  • Treatment or Healing (Which are not the same
thing) is the process of growth and in this
    dimensional metaphor deepening.
  • Treatment may start the process of healing.
  • Healing can happen outside of treatment, where
    treatment fails to go.

66
Dimensions of Natural MindComplex
  • The Holistic Counselor is trained to be at least
    Complex.
  • (Some are squares, some are cubes)
  • A square can see squares, lines, and points.
  • A cube can see other cubes, squares, lines, and
    points.
  • Especially within the framework of the three
    views of addiction.

67
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • A Multiplex Counselor might be like a hypercube,
  • A hypercube can see other hypercubes, cubes,
    squares, lines, and points.
  • In other words they might be able to perceive and
manipulate the hidden forces that shape cubes.
  • Multiplex also involves hidden culturally bound
or coded perceptual dimensions of space / time
    including various time constructs,
    electromagnetic, atomic, sub-atomic, quantum,
    spiritual, mental, emotional, and other
    n-dimensional forces
  • Chi or Ki might be one such.

68
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • An example The phenomenon called
electromagnetism is made up of two forces that
always accompany each other, electricity and
magnetism. Everything electric has a magnetic
field, and moving magnets can generate
electricity. If we take the point of view of a
cube, electromagnetism is but one face or square
    of that cube.
  • That cube might not perceive the full dimensions
    (hypercube and beyond) that electromagnetism
    encompasses.

69
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • Nonetheless some electromagnetic aspects of
consciousness can be consciously manipulated. As
an example human being can learn to change their
    physical /mental/ emotional states using
    biofeedback. Brainwave training using EEG
(Electro Encephalo Gram) Brainwave analyzers can
    be a useful tool.

70
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • Brainwaves
  • Delta 0 - 2 Hz Coma to deep dreamless sleep.
  • Theta 3 - 6 Hz Dream sleep, Emotions
  • Alpha 7 - 12 Hz Brain Relaxed but alert, free
    associativeseeking data in holographic space.
  • Beta 13 - 27 Hz Brain is actively working,
    linear logical computational mode.
  • Gamma 27 Plus Psychotic State
  • Not Surprisingly certain drugs enhance or
    reinforce certain brainwave states.
  • What if you could do for yourself what the drugs
do for you? Drugs are not Skill.

71
Conditioning Natural Mind
  • Spirit
  • Mind
  • Emotions
  • Body

72
Conditioning for Addiction
  • Addiction is continually seeking outer answers
    for inner questions.
  • Its as if you are taught all your life by people
you trust (or you are supposed to trust) that
  • 2 2 5
  • You will note that 5 is larger than the actual

  • You will try to believe that 5 is the answer even
though intuitively you know it cant be.

  • Tension Reduction Hypothesis (Jellinek)
  • Society causes tension, tension is painful, pain
    demands relief.
  • That Demand creates two problems
  • A. Reduce tension creating conditions
  • B. Find mode of relief for tension

76
Natural Mind
  • These are separated only to talk about them. In a
healthy and aware person they work together in
    balance.
  • Spirit is the real experience of connection to
something greater than yourself. Referred to in
    at least two ways
  • 1. Silent Compassionate Witness
  • 2. Still Small Voice Within
  • (Your own Personal Intuition It is always True
and Correct, Ya Know Ya shoulda listened!)

77
Natural Mind
  • Emotions include your feelings, your dreams
  • Your Body is where you live while conscious.
(Where are you when you are not conscious?)
  • Mind includes your thoughts, theories,
memories, drives, ego-programming (I am this
body, these feelings, these thoughts, this
history and no more) and visions of the future.

78
Natural Mind
  • The Problem is Choice
  • Do you accept that you have made or will make
    certain choices?
  • One of those choices is Who You Are?
  • Are the circumstances of your life chosen by you
    or inflicted upon you?
  • Poor in Wallet is not the same as Poor in Spirit?

79
Natural Mind
  • These are separated only to talk about them. In a
healthy and aware person they work together in
    balance.
  • Spirit connects your Mind, Emotions, Body, beyond
the limits imposed by the Ego.
  • Originally you werent addicted and were
    connected and self-reliant.
  • When did you Stop?
  • Start by Balancing

80
Natural Mind
  • A Balance is Achieved where the Inner World
remains unchanged regardless of the outer world.
  • The outer world can be influenced by this
  • Soul Force (As King referred to it.)

81
Natural Mind
  • In the beginning of your life you begin to learn
to separate yourself from your environment and
    form an identity.
  • A baby learns about object permanence, expresses
emotions, acquires language and learning, learns
to eat, walk, and use its body.

A point is an experience, an emotion, a memory,
points added together make a line.
A line is series of points, some of which are
related, some of which may be "off the wall", or
lead to other lines.
82
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • People have experiences along all four lines.

These experiences can be deepened and a greater
range of them can be explored.
83
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • The next dimension beyond this allows one to
"see", perceive, or feel, and therefore
manipulate, the forces which shape our feelings,
body image and wellness, our mental health, and
    our spiritual being.
  • Beyond what can be pictured here in
two-dimensional space are yet other sources of
    learning and influence.

84
Dimensions of Natural Mind Simplex
  • Each higher dimension contains all the lower ones
within it. If you use this as a metaphor for
    human development
  • A point of view which can only see points close
to it. Or a line of thought which can only see
    adjacent lines and points.

A line can see other lines and points, but not
squares and complex structures.
The Point being In Addiction ones attention is
focused on a single point or line to the
exclusion of others.
85
Dimensions of Natural Mind
  • The Counselor sees the original sober person at
the heart of the suffering addict.
  • Healing is the process of bringing that being to
    the surface.
  • Treatment or Healing (Which are not the same
thing) is the process of growth and in this
    dimensional metaphor deepening.
  • Treatment may start the process of healing.
  • Healing can happen outside of treatment, where
    treatment fails to go.

86
Dimensions of Natural MindComplex
  • The Holistic Counselor is trained to be at least
    Complex.
  • (Some are squares, some are cubes)
  • A square can see squares, lines, and points.
  • A cube can see other cubes, squares, lines, and
    points.
  • Especially within the framework of the three
    views of addiction.

87
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • A Multiplex Counselor might be like a hypercube,
  • A hypercube can see other hypercubes, cubes,
    squares, lines, and points.
  • In other words they might be able to perceive and
manipulate the hidden forces that shape cubes.
  • Multiplex also involves hidden culturally bound
or coded perceptual dimensions of space / time
    including various time constructs,
    electromagnetic, atomic, sub-atomic, quantum,
    spiritual, mental, emotional, and other
    n-dimensional forces
  • Chi or Ki might be one such.

88
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • An example The phenomenon called
electromagnetism is made up of two forces that
always accompany each other, electricity and
magnetism. Everything electric has a magnetic
field, and moving magnets can generate
electricity. If we take the point of view of a
cube, electromagnetism is but one face or square
    of that cube.
  • That cube might not perceive the full dimensions
    (hypercube and beyond) that electromagnetism
    encompasses.

89
Dimensions of Natural Mind Multiplex
  • Nonetheless some electromagnetic aspects of
consciousness can be consciously manipulated. As
an example human being can learn to change their
    physical /mental/ emotional states using
    biofeedback. Brainwave training using EEG
(Electro Encephalo Gram) Brainwave analyzers can
    be a useful tool.

90

92
Conditioning for Addiction
  • Addiction is continually seeking outer answers
    for inner questions.
  • Its as if you are taught all your life by people
you trust (or you are supposed to trust) that
  • 2 2 5
  • You will note that 5 is larger than the actual
    answer.
  • You will try to believe that 5 is the answer even
though intuitively you know it cant be.

98
Multigenerational TraumaAutogenocide
  • African slaves being mistreated in America
    duplicate their treatment in successive
    generations
  • Antwone Fisher My foster mother called all
three of us boys Nigger, and we could tell which
one of us she meant by the way she said it.
  • He reacted to his abuse using rage as his
    substance of abuse.
  • Others use substances to self-medicate.

99
Multigenerational Trauma Autogenocide
  • Abuse is about power control.
  • People abused as children feel anger but cant
direct it at their abuser. So they turn that
    anger inward.
  • A people abused cannot direct their anger against
a society of abusers, so they often turn that
anger in on themselves in acts that are as
    self-destructive.

Multigenerational Autogenocide
  • Multigenerational trauma is when either the
memory of the trauma is passed on, or the
traumatizing practices are passed on to
    succeeding generations.
  • Autogenocide is when people engage in health
practices which duplicate the end effect of
    traumatic violence.

  • PTSD or Multigenerational Trauma is experienced
in pieces flashbacks, dreams, drug experiences.
  • Without skill development people attempt to
suppress the memory events by using, or by
    prescribing suppressive medicationsProzac,
    Trazidoneor self-medicate using addictive
    substances or processes
  • Drugs are Not Skill

    one that you find useful)
  • Mindfulness Cultivation of the Witness / Inner

  • Eat foods that replace what youve lost from
    using.
  • Eat less, move more if you are overweight.

  • Mind follows the breath Control the breath,
    Control the mind.

Prevention is the Practice of That Which Makes Us
Strong - African Precept
  • The first thing you need in the confrontation of
addiction is to bring into balance is your mind.
  • The way we do that first is through the Breath
  • In Aramaic (The language that Isho-Jesus spoke)
the word for Holy Spirit means Breath.
  • In Aramaic ahebw labwheldbhaybhaykhun (Love your
Enemies) is actually instructions on how to do
    it.
  • Isho says in the instructions Bring yourself
back into rhythm within that would mean the
    rhythm of the breathslowcoolingpowerful

  • 12 Resonance Breath (5 count In, 10 Count Out)
You give more than you take.
  • Breathe from your diaphram
  • Inbreath count 12345
  • Outbreath count 12345678910
  • To establish a rhythm silently think (one
thousand, chimpanzee, mississippi, Alaha - Unity)
    between each count.
  • Take 10 Breaths minimum
  • When you are angry dont take a deep breath take
    ten.
  • You can do this eyes open or closed especially
depending on your circumstances, (dont close
your eyes in front of the enemy) eventually it
    becomes reflex.
  • Assuming a 15 second cycle for each breath this
is about 2.5 minutes. (Cheaper than beer, a
    joint, or Prozac)

111
M.A.P. Mind / Mood. Altering. Practice.
  • Mind Follows the Breath
  • Various religions, spiritual disciplines,
creative and martial arts note that there is a
relationship between your mood and your
    breathing.
  • Most often we have been domesticated to rely on
    external sources for our mood
  • Food affects mood, we acknowledge this through
    the term Comfort Food
  • Food, Alcohol, and Television, Pharmaceutical
Drugs, Street Drugs, Church, Dancing, Music, are
all used to affect mood and they all have an
    affect on how you breathe.
  • In addiction you put the control outside of you.
  • Natural Mind develops the conscious internal
    controls.

112
M.A.P. Mind / Mood. Altering. Practice.
  • Mind Follows the Breath
  • Natural Mind develops the conscious internal
    controls.
  • I am not suggesting you simply throw away your
    medications and simply breathe.
  • I am saying you have to breathe anyway, the
breath is free (today anyway) and you might well
try to breathe consciously, because conscious
attention to the breath is an effective practice
    in a number of areas.
  • Mind or Mood Altering Chemicals or
  • Mind or Mood Altering Practices.

113
Notice Your Breath
  • No not how it smells
  • How deep it goes into your lungs through your
    nose
  • Notice how deep or shallow your breathing is
while you are doing various activities.
  • Shallower the breath the faster the brainwave
  • Deeper and slower the breath the slower the
    brainwave.

114
Focus Your Locus
  • Inner Locus of Control is easily focused with
    breath control
  • When you are bored, notice how you are breathing,
what bodily sensations you feel and where you
feel them, and notice that boredom is also a
    body state.
  • When you are tired notice the same thing.
  • See how those states change with a 12 Resonance
    Breath
