    erbird etc)
  • Incoming server receives the mail
  • imap.unc.edu
  • Outgoing server sends the mail
  • smtp.unc.edu
  • Internet message access protocol (imap) and
    simple mail transfer protocol (smtp)
  • These are standardized methods of communication,
as well find out, Internet communications are
    all based on shared protocols

8
Email aliases something cool
  • Email aliases
  • Aliases are alternative names that you can setup
    for email account
  • so you could setup an alias for
    jdoe2257_at_email.unc.edu, such as jane_doe_at_unc.edu,
mails sent to either will go to the same place
(note that the original is always there, and
should use that for setting up email clients)
  • Aliases can be set via, onyen.unc.edu, in mail
    management

9
Computing Backup/Storage
  • Backup/storage plan
  • Always have multiple copies of your files
  • CDR/CDRW, DVD-R
  • Jump drive, zip, floppy disc, etc.
  • Upload to your account on isis.unc.edu
  • Email as attachment to yourself
  • Shit do happen, especially w/ technology, its
your responsibility to save often and make
    backups
  • First task for the class is to backup data you
deem important from your computer/laptop anything
outside of it. Believe me, it is important.
