group makes - Create a three dimensional model.
- Create a diagram of your space station with the
parts labeled according to their function - Create laws for the colony.

5Primary Source Of Plymouth Plantation by
William Bradford
- The journal is the history of the first 30 years
of Plymouth Colony, handwritten by William
Bradford. It is known as "Of Plymouth Plantation"
from the heading on the first page. The Bradford
journal is the single most complete authority for
the story of the Pilgrims and the early years of
the Colony they founded.
6Why did they go?
Bacon's Landing of the Pilgrims
7Reasons to go
- From the journal of William Bradford...The
Pilgrims decide to emigrate to America despite
the perils and dangers "all great honourable
actions are accompanied with great difficulties,
and must be both enterprised and overcome with
answerable courages. It was granted ye dangers
were great, but not desperate the difficulties
were many, but not invincible. For though their
were many of them likely, yet they were not
cartaine it might be sundrie of ye things feared
might never befale others by providente care
ye use of good means, might in a great measure be
prevented and all of them, through ye help of
God, by fortitude and patience, might either be
borne, or overcome. True it was, that such
atempts were not to be made and undertaken
without good ground reason not rashly or
lightly as many have done for curiositie or hope
of gaine, c. But their condition was not
ordinarie their ends were good honourable
their calling lawfull, urgente and therfore
they might expecte ye blessing of god in their
proceding. Yea, though they should loose their
lives in this action, yet might they have
comforte in the same, and their endeavors would
be honourable. They lived hear but as men in
exile, in a poore condition and as great
miseries might possibly befale them in this
place, for ye 12. years of truce the truce
between Holland and Spain were now out, ther
was nothing but beating of drumes, and preparing
for warr, the events wherof are allway
uncertaine."
8SUBTASK 1
- Why are you leaving your safe home and loving
family to go to a new place with many dangers and
uncertainties to begin a new colony? - SUBTASK 1 Discuss and record in your journal
9Problems
- The Separatists knew they would face many
problems in the New World. With your group,
create a chart of problems that they faced.
- The Mayflower at Sea by Margeson
- "Now all being compact together in one ship, they
put to sea again with a prosperous wind.
William Bradford
10- From the journal of William Bradford...A
description of the hard circumstances of the
winter of 1621 - "In these hard difficulte beginings they found
some discontents murmurings arise amongst some,
and mutinous speeches carriags in other but
they were soone quelled overcome by ye wisdome,
patience, and just equall carrage of things by
ye Govr and better part, wch clave faithfully
togeather in ye maine. But that which was most
sadd lamentable was, that in 2. or 3. moneths
time halfe of their company dyed, espetialy in
Jan February, being ye depth of winter, and
wanting houses other comforts being infected
with ye scurvie other diseases, which this long
vioage their inacomodate condition had brought
upon them so as ther dyed some times 2. or 3. of
a day, in ye foresaid time that of 100. odd
persons, scarce 50. remained. And of these in ye
time of most distres, ther was but 6. or 7. sound
persons, who, to their great comendations be it
spoken, spared no pains, night nor day, but with
abundance of toyle and hazard of their owne
health, fetched them woode, made them fires,
drest them meat, made their beads, washed their
lothsome cloaths, cloathed uncloathed them in
a word, did all ye homly necessarie offices for
them wch dainty quesie stomacks cannot endure
to hear named and all this willingly
cherfully, without any grudging in ye least,
shewing herein their true love unto their friends
bretheren. A rare example worthy to be
remembred. Two of these 7. were Mr. William
Brewster, ther reverend Elder, Myles Standish,
ther Captein military comander, unto whom my
selfe, many others, were much beholden in our
low sicke condition."
11SUBTASK 2
- With your colony group members, make a list of
anticipated problems that you might face on the
new Mars Colony. Rank them in terms of
importance. What criteria did you choose to rank
them. Did the Pilgrims share any of the same
problems? - SUBTASK 2 Discuss and record in your journal
12Writing Assignment
- Write a persuasive letter to your family
convincing them that you should be allowed to be
on the first American colonists on Mars.
13Who will sponsor you?
- This is the First Peirce Patent and the text
does not survive. We assume, however, that it
followed the pattern set down by other patents
for particular plantations, which gave permission
to attempt a settlement within the jurisdiction
of Jamestown.
14Who will sponsor you?
- Joint stock companies
- The cost of maintaining a colony in the New World
could cost as much as 20,000. So to pay for
these expeditions, people created joint stock
companies. People who bought shares in the joint
stock company would get a share of the profits.
The Separatists had an agreement with a group of
London investors. The colonists were supposed to
pay off the price of the trip and earn their
shares by working entirely for the company. The
company promised to send over food and supplies.
15Discussion and journal prompt
- Who will sponsor the establishment of your colony
on Mars? How will you pay them back so that they
can make a profit from your colony?
16SUBTASK 3 Writing assignment
- Write a letter to your sponsor.
- What exactly are you going to ask them for?
- What will be the contract conditions? (what will
they do and what will you do in return?) - How long will you take to repay them?
- How will you repay them?

William Bradford, published in 1592.
20SUBTASK 4 What provisions will you take?
- What will you and the members of your group take
with you to the new colony. Space is very limited
on your spaceship and each of you may take 15
items. Be sure to discuss with each other what
you are taking and provide a reason that you
choose that item. Rank them in order from most to
least important. - TASK 4 Discuss and record in your journal
21Compare your list to the Pilgrims (Separatists)
- Check the recommended supply list given to people
heading to the New World. Do you have any items
in common with the supply list of 1630?
A Catalog of such needefull things as every
Planter doth or ought to provide to go to
New-England
22SUBTASK 5 DISCUSSION
- What people should you take with you to begin a
new colony on Mars? - Choose 10 important occupations, not particular
names (example teacher, not Mrs. Woodfin
important to educate the colonists on Mars) - Write your choices in your journal.
23Writing Assignment
- Write a persuasive newspaper advertisement to
convince someone to join your new colony on Mars.
24What is happening in this famous painting?

fucntion. - Create a blueprint (diagram/plan) for your
colony. - Create a list of materials that you will use
- You will substitute art materials for real
materials. - Connect your pieces at the end and it must fit on
one desk. - You will have two class periods to complete this
segment of the project. - Present your colony to the class.
