2SFU Safety Policy
- The safety of all members of the university
community as well as visitors to campus is a
major concern of the university. It is therefore,
the policy of the university to - Protect the safety of all faculty, staff,
students visitors (contractors sub
contractors) against unsafe conditions and
occupational hazards - Formulate and carry out continuing effective
safety programs appropriate to university
operations - Give priority to a safe work environment in the
planning, direction and implementation of
university activities and - Comply with relevant statutes, regulations and
standards of regulatory authorities representing
occupational health and safety.

- Prime Contractor
- Continuing Service Contractor
- Project Contractor
4Prime Contractors
- Fully enclosed site
- Contractually site owners
- Safety within the site is their responsibility
- Perimeter must be maintained
- Interface with university services must be
coordinated with SFU
5Continuing Service Contractors
- Work and work risks remain the same
- Yearly Orientation required
- SFU Safety policy updates distributed as required
- SFU delegates the safety responsibility but
accountability remains with SFU - SFU Safety advisors will monitor work
periodically
6Project Contractors
- Project orientation for each project
- Responsible for sub contractors under their
direction - Yearly orientation required
- SFU Safety policy updates distributed as required
- SFU delegates the safety responsibility but
accountability remains with SFU - SFU Safety advisors will monitor work
periodically
7University Expectations
- Contractor must have a written safety program
- Worksafe compliant (WCB)
- Workers must be trained in the assigned duties
- Workers must be familiar with regulations
pertaining to the work being undertaken - Professionalism / harassment
- Community Sensitive
- New young worker training
- Unsafe work practices are Unacceptable and may
result in the termination of the contract
8What Every Contractor Needs to Know
- Security is the first contact for emergencies

9Worksafe Matters (WCB)
- Where the Contractor is required to Notify the
WCB the SFU Project Manager is to be copied - All Asbestos NOPAs are to be copied to SFU EHS
Department fax 778 782 5678 - Any Written communication from the WCB is to be
copied to the SFU Project Manager - This may include certification by a P.ENG,
written orders, variance order, etc.
