  • At least 12,500 years ago ancestors of Native
    Americans settled North America.
  • Europeans arrived between the 1500 and 1700s.
    However, it is believed the Vikings first landed
    on Canadas eastern coast around 1000 AD. Canada
    means village in Iroquois.

Landforms Six major physical regions and more
lakes and inland waterways than any other country
in the world.
  • A. Appalachian Highlands SE (known as
    Appalachian Mts. In US) Rolling hills and low
    mountains. Many valleys with farms. Lots of
    forests. Lots of deep water harbors along the
    jagged, rocky coast.
  • B. St. Lawrence and Great Lakes Lowlands
    borders the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River
    (river provides link between the Great Lakes and
    the Atlantic Ocean). Rich soil. Most of
    Canadas people, farms and industries are here.
    Niagara Falls is where Lake Erie flows into Lake
    Ontario.

  • C. Canadian Shield and Artic Islands surrounds
    Hudson Bay. Some of the oldest rock formations
    in North America are found here. Most of area is
    covered in ice and snow.
  • D. Interior Plains extension of our Great
    Plains. Many forests and lakes in the north with
    prairie in the south.

  • E. Rocky Mountains extensions of our Rocky
    Mountains. Rich in minerals.
  • F. Pacific Coast Mt. Logan is here and is
    Canadas highest peak. Also located here are the
    Coast Mountains.

H. Todays Challenges
  • 1. Regional Differences 80 of Quebec is
    French speaking while the rest of Canada speaks
    English. Many in Quebec think they should be
    independent from the rest of Canada
  • 2. NAFTA 70 of trade is with United States
    but only 20 is returned. Three countries of
    Canada, U.S. and Mexico agreed to a trading
    partnership.

  • French 1534 founded Quebec and Montreal and
    ruled area around the Great Lakes and St.
    Lawrence River.
  • British 1497 Atlantic Coast area French and
    British fought over both areas and British won.
    We now have the longest unfortified border in the
    world between our 2 countries.
  • Birth of Canada 1982 they claimed the right to
    change their constitution without input from
    British. British monarch still reigns but has no
    real power.
  • Canadas Government borrowed ideas from both
    United States and England Parliamentary
