Jesus Shares our humanity as our brother
  • Jesus a brother to the saved (vs.11-13)
  • Same sourceWe are all from one (vs.11a)He is
intimately identified with His ownNot same
family or Father but blood (vs.14)We share the
    same Adamic source
  • Same IdentityA brother to the saved in blood
    and fleshHalf brothers (Mat.1246-48
    Lk.819-20 Jn.212)Spiritual sense
    (Mt.1249-50 Mk.333-35 Lk.821
    Rom.829)Unusual but not unparalleled

7
Jesus Suffers for us as the Pioneer
  • Jesus is the author of our salvation. The
originator or more specifically the pioneer. He
has gone into uncharted waters for us. Ahead of
the rest as the founder of their salvation. The
sense of his victory over death and Satan.
  • Our basic problemThe sentence of deathThe fear
    of deathThe slavery to Satan

8
Jesus Suffers for us as the Pioneer
  • The unique solutionMan must pay the sin debt
which results in deathThere are only two choices
either we or anotherGod cannot pay our sin
debt He cannot dieJesus became a man and died
in our place (vs.9d 14b)His death has rendered
the devil powerless over usHis death has set us
free from fear and slavery (vs.15a)

9
Jesus Suffers for us as the Pioneer
  • The final resultWe are assured of glory of
Heaven (vs.10b)Not just the present state but
the culmination of itRomans 829 its a done
dealWe enter by simple faith in His work on the
    cross

10
Jesus Sustains us as our High Priest
  • He sanctifies usThe means by which we are made
holyChrist makes us holy (the present active
participle) The He of verse 11 is Christ He
who sanctifiesThe believers are made holy (the
    present passive participle) Referring primarily
to positional not moral holinessThis is a
present continuous activity of Christ in Heaven

11
Jesus Sustains us as our High Priest
  • He helps usHelp take hold of, grasp, catch,
take by the handHe does not give help to angels
    (vs.16a)Most assuredly a certaintyHe gives
help to His own (vs.16b - the seed of
Abraham)Like a young child held by the fathers
    hand

12
Jesus Sustains us as our High Priest
  • He represents us before GodHe was made like us
(vs.17a)Why? So He could become our High Priest
(vs.17b)What kind of High Priest? Merciful
faithful (vs.17c) showing mercy to us and faith
towards God Only NT book that calls Jesus High
    Priest (12x)
  • What is the role of the High Priest? To enter
the holiest of all and present us to God Not
just once a year but continuously Not with
    imperfect sacrifices but with perfect
  • He satisfies God regarding the believers sin
    (vs.17d)

13
Jesus Sustains us as our High Priest
  • He empathizes with usThe writer is very emphatic
He Himself In his humanity none otherHe
was tempted yet apart from sinHe suffered in all
manner beyond what we sufferHe sorrowed at the
tomb of LazarusSo he can come to our aid when we
experience these things He alone is able.

14
Dont lose Hope
  • The 4th reason not to lose hope or not to drift
    away from Christ.
  • We have a man in glory who sustains us as our
High Priest in the presence of God (vs.10-18)
  • He makes us holy, he comes along side us and
takes our hand, he is full of mercy towards us as
he speaks to God on our behalf, and he empathizes
with us in all our distresses as none other can
seeing he himself went through all of these things
