We thank you, Lord, that we are not like those
denominations, for we assemble properly, worship
correctly, organize ourselves as we should, and
do not drink, smoke, swear or engage in sins of
the flesh (i.e., sexual immorality)

8The Inner Ring Mentality
- The only certain rule is that the insiders and
outsiders call it by different names. From inside
it may be designated, in simple cases, by mere
enumeration it may be called you and Tony and
me. When it is very secure and comparatively
stable in membership, it calls itself, we. - From outside, if you have despaired of getting
into it, you call it that gang or they or
so-and-so and his set or the Caucus or the
Inner Ring. - I believe that in all mens lives at certain
periods, and in many mens lives at all periods
between infancy and extreme old age, one of the
most dominant elements is the desire to be inside
the local Ring and the terror of being left
outside - It is a terrible bore, of course, when old Smith
draws you aside and whispers, Look here, weve
got to get you in on this examination somehow or
Charles and I saw at once that youve got to be
on this committee. A terrible bore ah, but how
much more terrible if you were left out!
9The Inner Ring Mentality
- This desire is one of the great permanent
mainsprings of human action. It is one of the
factors which go to make up the world as we know
it Unless you take measures to prevent it, this
desire is going to be one of the chief motives of
your life, from the first day on which you enter
your profession until the day when you are too
old to care. That will be the natural thing - the
life that will come to you of its own accord. Any
other kind of life, if you lead it, will be the
result of conscious and continuous effort. If
you do nothing about it, if you drift with the
stream, you will in fact be an inner ringer. I
dont say youll be a successful one thats as
may be. But whether by pining and moping outside
Rings that you can never enter, or by passing
triumphantly further and further in - one way or
the other you will be that kind of person.
10Destructiveness of the Flesh to Relationships

- Gal. 513 For you were called to freedom,
brethren only do not turn your freedom into an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve
one another. 14 For the whole Law is fulfilled

YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. 15 But if you bite
and devour one another, take care that you are
not consumed by one another. - Gal. 525 If we live by the Spirit, let us also
walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become
boastful, challenging one another, envying one
another.

Repent/Confess/Express Sorrow - Rom. 66 - knowing this, that our old self was
crucified with him, in order that our body of sin
might be done away with, so that we would no
longer be slaves to sin. - Phil. 23 - Do nothing from selfishness or empty
conceit, but with humility of mind regard one
another as more important than yourselves.

29The Cross The Flesh
- Our attitude to the flesh should be one of
ruthless repudiation. For those who belong to
Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires (Gal. 524). That is, we
have taken this evil slimy, slippery thing
called the flesh and nailed it to the cross.
This was our initial repentance. Crucifixion is
dramatic imagery for our uncompromising rejection
of all known evil. Crucifixion does not lead to a
quick or easy death it is an execution of
lingering pain. Yet it is decisive there is no
possibility of escaping it.
30The Cross The Flesh
- Our attitude to the Holy Spirit, on the other
hand, is to be one of unconditional surrender.
Paul uses several expressions for this. We are to
live by the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit,
and to keep in step with the Spirit (Gal. 516,
18, 25). That is, we are to allow Him His
rightful sovereignty over us, and follow His
righteous promptings.
31The Cross The Flesh
- Thus both our repudiation of the flesh and our
surrender to the Spirit need to be repeated
daily, however decisive our original repudiation
and surrender may have been. In Jesus words, we
are to take up (our) cross daily and follow Him
(Luke 923). We are also to go on being filled
with the Spirit (Eph. 518), as we open our
personality to Him daily. Both our repudiation
and our surrender are also to be worked out in
disciplined habits of life. It is those who sow
to the Spirit (Gal. 68) who reap the fruits of
the Spirit.
32The Cross The Flesh
- And to sow to the Spirit means to cultivate
the things of the Spirit, for example, by our
wise use of the Lords Day, the discipline of our
daily prayer and Bible reading, our regular
worship and attendance at the Lords Supper, our
Christian friendships and involvement in
Christian service. An inflexible principle of all
Gods dealings, both in the material and moral
realm, is that we reap what we sow. The rule is
invariable. It cannot be changed, for God cannot
be mocked (Gal. 67). We must not therefore be
surprised if we do not reap the fruit of the
Spirit when all the time we are sowing to the
flesh. Did we think we could cheat or fool God?
