BASIC PATTERNS OF BUSINESS LETTERS
  • The Basic patterns refers to the STYLES OF
    LAYOUT available for use.
  • The layout means the design in which the
    different parts of the letter are placed on the
    letterhead.
  • The parts are placed in the same order from top
    to bottom in all styles the variation is in the
    indentation and paragraph styles.
  • Indented Form
  • Full Block Form
  • Semi-Block Form
  • Hanging Indentation Form
  • NOMA Form

  • This is the oldest style
  • Now outdated
  • Inside Address Indented
  • Paragraph begins three to five spaces away from
    the left margin
  • Time consuming to type.

  • Most modern style
  • No indentation at all
  • The address has no punctuation at the end of line
  • No comma salutation, complimentary close
  • Double line space between the parts and between
    paragraphs
  • Reason for non-preference looks left-heavy.

  • inside address block form
  • date, complimentary close on right
  • beginning of every paragraph is on the left
    margin
  • subsequent lines are indented three to five
    spaces
  • gives a striking appearance
  • used to give empahsis on first words of every
    paragraph.

  • accepted in UK by the Institute of office
    Management.
  • maintains most of the features of the Full Block
    Form all lines begin at the left margin and the
    inside address is in block form
  • Special Features
  • It has no salutation and no complimentary close.

  • 2. the subject line is in capitals three lines
    below the inside address
  • 3. numbered items of a list begin at the left
    margin, but if there is no number, the items are
    indented five spaces there is no full stop at
    the end of the items.
  • 4. the writers name and title are typed in
    capitals in one line below the space for
    signature.
  • 5. this style is not popular as it is too far
    removed from the familiar, conventional styles
  • 6. also, it is considered impersonal, distant and
    lacking in feeling
  • 7. some people feel that this style saves time
    and sensibly omits meaningless salutation and
    complimentary close
