Title: Catch a Wave

1
  • Catch a Wave
  • TIME Lesson Two

2
Review Wave Terminology
  • Crest, Trough
  • Height, Depth
  • Wavelength
  • Amplitude, Period
  • Frequency 1 / T
  • Velocity ? f
  • Speed Wavelength / T
  • Transverse wave
  • Longitudinal wave
  • Surface wave
  • Medium

3
Liquid as a medium
  • Remember the medium of a wave is not
(significantly) changed when the waves energy
    passes through it.
  • Wave through liquid. Does density matter?

4
Solid as a medium
  • Rayleigh surface wave
  • Wave through a solid. Examples?

5
Speed of Waves
  • How do we calculate the speed of a wave?
  • Speed Wavelength / Period
  • For this simple equation, plug in the two
variables you know to find the value of the
    unknown variable.
  • For a wave that is 5 m long and takes 3 seconds
to pass, the speed is 1.67 m/s.

6
Wave collisions
  • Waves can collide and combine to be either
    constructive or destructive interference.
  • Check out this small flash animation.

    ation2.html
  • What happens if you run/splash clockwise in a
circular pool. What happens if three of you do
so? What happens if 12 of you do so?

7
Wave Reflections
  • When a wave comes into contact with a barrier,
the incident wave bounces off as a reflected
wave. The angle of the incident wave is equal to
the angle of the reflected wave.
  • What angle does the normal make with the barrier?

8
What about underneath the water?
  • How do particles underneath the waters surface
    react to a wave?
  • Work in teams of two. One person will enter the
data into the simulator, the other will record
the results in an Excel spreadsheet in the
    colored cells.
  • Print out your data and use it to answer the
    questions on your worksheet.
