Childs Children October 2004 Dear Parents, Happy
Halloween! I hope this newsletter finds you all
well. Here is a look at what will be happening
in our classroom this month. Reading We will be
finishing up our 1st theme, All Together Now,
as well as begin our 2nd theme, Surprise. We
will be reviewing beginning and ending
consonants, as well as short vowel word families
(-ot, -et, -ug, etc.). We will be studying story
structure, details, fantasy vs. reality,
high-frequency words (five, four, in, once,
three, two, upon, what, do, for, I, is, me, my,
said, are, away, does, he, live, pull, they,
where), and the capitalization of names. We will
continue our mini-lessons during the Writing
Workshop. Math We will be continue our
study of graphs, patterns, sorting, number
recognition, and number writing. We will begin
our study of number concepts (how many ways to
make 5). Handwriting We will continue to
practice the proper formation of the alphabet.
We will also be working on a Halloween
handwriting book. Content Area Study We will
continue with our study of Being Safe. We are
working on singing melodies through our practices
of our Halloween Program. We have also begun our
study of living things, most recently with
caterpillars and butterflies. Homework I
appreciate all of your help with the homework
books. Your children are really coming along in
their reading. I have been sending home a
weekly assessment of the words we have been
working on in class, as well as the word
families. The words that your child missed, if
any, will be circled. Please help your child
practice these words at home, as they will be
used in stories from here on out. As you can
see, we have a busy month ahead of us. I have
come to love your children, and am having a ball

Friday, so I kept the quarters of those who
brought them today. October 11 Columbus Day

Ribbon Week October 22 Hearing
Screening Popcorn Friday October 26 Class
Halloween Party-200. Students will be able to
put their costumes on at 145 today. Please do
not send them to school in their
costumes. Mrs. Childs and Miss Hansens
Halloween Program- 630 p.m., in the South
Commons Area. We have been working very hard
learning our songs and poems. Please come and
watch your child shine. October 27 Quality
