  • Literally means a standing apart
  • Describes a condition where all fellowship, all
    togetherness are gone

  • Those who cause brethren to stand apart from
    other brethren are to be marked and turned away
    from.
  • Not necessary that one cause a fight, just
    causing the break of togetherness is sinful

  • Personal division (people refusing to speak to
    each other)
  • Class division (rich versus poor)
  • Racial division
  • Party division (where devotion to party or person
    rises above devotion to God)
  • Arises with prejudice and stubbornness

  • Greek hairesis (heresy, faction, division)
  • Divisiveness, the logical outcome of dissensions
  • Dissensions refers to individuals holding
    themselves apart
  • Factions speaks of groups of people holding
    themselves separate from others
