Faith feyth. n.

    faith the Jewish faith.

3
Our worlds understanding of faith
  • Faith as fact

Sometimes people think that faith is knowing
something is true beyond any doubt whatsoever,
and so they try to prove faith through empirical
evidence but thats the wrong approach.
(Lynn Anderson, Case for Faith)
4
Our worlds understanding of faith
  • 2. Faith as a blind leap

Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to
evade the need to think and evaluate evidence.
Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because
of, the lack of evidence. (Richard Dawkins)

I believe I can fly by R. Kelly
  • I used to think that I could not go onAnd life
was nothing but an awful songBut now I know the
meaning of true loveI'm leaning on the
everlasting armsIf I can see it, then I can do
itIf I just believe it, there's nothing to itI
believe I can flyI believe I can touch the skyI
think about it every night and daySpread my
wings and fly awayI believe I can soarI see me
running through that open doorI believe I can

Hebrews 111-3
  • Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and
certain of what we do not see. This is what the
ancients were commended for. By faith we
understand that the universe was formed at Gods
command, so that what is seen was not made out of
    what was visible.

7
Biblical Definition of FAITH (n.)
  • (v.1) Now faith is being sure of what we hope
for and certain of what we do not see.

True Faith rests upon an absolute trusting
relationship with God.

Lessons in the life of the faithful
  • (v.2) This is what the ancients were commended
    for.

A look into the life of Abraham
10
Abraham (8-19)
  • 8By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place
he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed
and went, even though he did not know where he
was going. 9By faith he made his home in the
promised land like a stranger in a foreign
country he lived in tents, as did Isaac and
Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same
promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city
with foundations, whose architect and builder is
    God.
  •

11
Abraham (8-19)
  • 11By faith Abraham, even though he was past
ageand Sarah herself was barrenwas enabled to
become a father because he considered him
faithful who had made the promise. 12And so from
this one man, and he as good as dead, came
descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky
and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

12
Abraham (8-19)
  •  13All these people were still living by faith
when they died. They did not receive the things
promised they only saw them and welcomed them
from a distance. And they admitted that they were
aliens and strangers on earth. 14People who say
such things show that they are looking for a
country of their own. 15If they had been thinking
of the country they had left, they would have had
opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were
longing for a better countrya heavenly one.
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their
God, for he has prepared a city for them.

13
Abraham (8-19)
  •  17By faith Abraham, when God tested him,
offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received
the promises was about to sacrifice his one and
only son, 18even though God had said to him, "It
is through Isaac that your offspring will be
reckoned." 19Abraham reasoned that God could
raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did
    receive Isaac back from death.

14
Modern day Abrahams
True faith requires a person to respond to the
call of God in their lives.
15
Faith and Gods work
  • (v.3) By faith we understand that the universe
was formed at Gods command, so that what is seen
was not made out of what was visible.

16
Faith feyth. v.
  • Faith is a living thing, mighty in working,
valiant and strong, ever doing, ever fruitful so
that it is impossible that he who is endued
therewith should not work always good works
without ceasing for such is his nature.
    Martin Luther

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not
accompanied by action, is dead. (James 217)
True faith is a living faith that requires us to
live out the relationship we have with God.
17
Called to a faithful life
  • For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faithand this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God not by works, so that no one can
boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared
in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 28-10)

18
  • Where in your life do you need to say to God
    Here I am?
