  • PRIORITY SPENDING essential (although varies)
  • In general
  • Housing, Basic food, water, warmth, light and
    anything subject to potential loss of liberty
  • NON-PRIORITY non-essentials
  • Including
  • Socialising, sports, hobbies and luxuries
  • IDEAL BUDGET is INCOMEgtEXPENDITURE
  • REALISTIC BUDGET is INCOME EXPENDITURE!

    have 50 left, what are you going to spend it

  • A. Going out for a meal with your mates?
  • B. Train ticket home?
  • C. Those new books you need to study for the
    exams after Christmas?

Professional Money Saving Tips
  • Plan ahead (diary)
  • Keep a record of what you spend receipts
  • Search on the internet
  • Utilise offers e.g. banks, student discounts,
    collect points
  • Student offers e.g. nights out, shops, travel,
    cinema
  • Pay in cash avoid cards (especially credit
    cards)
  • Buy in sales/offers or second-hand
  • Books equipment savings
  • Food drink savings which supermarket, shop at
    the end of the day not when hungry, make a list
    stick to it!
  • Sharing
  • Economise and be Green travel, electricity
    etc
  • Be wary of going overdrawn - authorised vs.
    unauthorised
  • Utility savings inc. phones deals
  • Keep some reserves, if you can!

Other student money saving tips
  • Get a job!
  • A night in with mates can be as good as a night
    out
  • Fancy dress dont hire, make your own
  • Cook together and doing your laundry together
  • Voluteering
  • Sell things you dont want or need anymore e.g.
    ebay
  • Cut up credit store cards
  • You wont need all the books on your reading
    lists, trust me?
  • Speak to people about it e.g. the Advice Unit
