Why study history ?
  • History teaches you a range of different issues,
    values and themes which are important to the
    world of work
  • allows us to understand, judge and interpret
    information
  • encourages critical thinking
  • to become independent and work under pressure
  • develop an understanding of how we have arrived
    at the present point
  • develop our own ideas, thoughts and opinions
  • construct arguments and develop your own opinions

How will History be taught ?
  • It will be slightly different from what you might
    have experienced at GCSE. There will be a range
    of different teaching methods. These will
    include
  • debate and discussion
  • independent research
  • seminar and whiteboard presentations
  • opportunities for a visit in Year 13

    to Civil Rights Essay based unit
  • Unit 6 - Hitler and the Nazi State - Power and
    Control - This is the Synoptic Unit and is an
    essay based examination which draws together
    themes studied through the whole course - 1 hr 45

  • The AS consists of 3 Modules
  • Unit 1 The Seeds of Evil The Rise of National
    Socialism in Germany to 1933 - A Source based
    examination - 1hr 30 minutes
  • Unit 2 Welfare and the Constitution The Liberal
    Governments 1906-1915 -An Essay based examination
    - 1 essay -1 hr
  • Unit 3 Life in Hitlers Germany between 1933 and
    1939 This is a source based Unit Written paper

Unit 1The Seeds of Evil
  • This Unit looks at the growth of The Nazi Party
    from its early days in Munich to the take-over of
    power in 1932.

Unit 2Welfare and the Constitution
  • This Module looks at the Liberal Government of
    1906-1915 and examines how it set up early Social
    Reform measures
  • how it dealt with opposition in the House of
    Lords
  • how it dealt with problems in Ireland

Unit 3Life in Hitlers Germany
  • This module looks at Life in Hitlers Germany
    between 1933 and 1939
  • This is assessed by a source based examination at
    the end of the year.
  • Students will study-
  • Nazi economic solutions
  • The Social impact of Nazism
  • Nazisms racist policies

Unit 4 From Peace to Appeasement
  • This unit examines the way in which British
    Foreign Policy aimed to avoid war with Germany
    through the 1920s and 1930s
  • We ask the question why this policy was pursued
    and why it failed in 1939

Unit 5Integration and DiversityUSA from Civil
War to Civil Rights
  • How did living standards and opportunities for
    different social and ethnic groups change in this
    period?
  • In what ways did emigration and race-relations
    policies change in the period

Unit 6 Hitler and the Nazi State
  • this unit is about the power and control that
    Hitler and the Nazis exerted in Germany in the
    period 1933-1945. We ask the questions
  • How popular was Nazi Rule
  • Was Hitler a weak Dictator or Master in the
    3rd Reich
  • This is the Synoptic paper and draws on the range
    of skilled employed through the whole course

Every year the History department takes Y12 and
Y13 students on a trip abroad that has some
historical relevance to the taught courses This
year we are going to Washington and New York

What is the IB?
International Baccalaureate History
  • The International Baccalaureate is a broad and
    balanced Diploma course.
  • It is recognised as a first rate international
    University entrance qualification.
  • The Diploma allows students to specialise in
    certain areas, but also maintain a breadth of
    academic study

Why study IB History?
  • The Department have a very successful IB teaching
    record. The maximum points score is 7. 6 points
    is often seen as roughly equivalent to A level
    grade A

The Course
  • The course content is very varied and covers some
    of the most fascinating events, people and
    concepts from the last century
  • Topics include
  • Russian History including the rule of Lenin and
    Stalin
  • Castros rule in Cuba 1959-present
  • Mao Tse-Tung and his rule in China
  • The First and Second World Wars
  • The Spanish Civil War
  • The Vietnam War

Assessment
  • Students are examined at the end of the two year
    course. The exams therefore test all of the
    skills that students have built up over time.
  • Students also complete one 2,000 word piece of
    coursework on any history topic of their choice.
