  were farmers.
• As time went on though more and more jobs were
  available.
• Shoemaker, wood cutter, armor smith, etc.
• Some, of course, were better than others.

• Feudalism grew as people relied on lords and
  knights for protection.
• Europe was divided into many different kingdoms
  all struggling for power.
• But the age of feudalism would soon end.

The Battle at Crecy

• France has 36,000 knights.
• England has 12,000 with 7,000 of them being
  bowman.
• England wins.
• The longbow makes knights in full armor
  unnecessary.

Other Factors

• The Crusades also helped by uniting the knights
  against a common enemy.
• The Magna Carta limited the power of kings.
• But the main factor in the end of feudalism
  though was the Black Death.

• Plague- highly
  infectious and
  usually fatal disease.
• 1347 The plague covers most of southern Italy.
• By 1351, just 5 years later, most
  of Europe was affected.

Results

• About 1/3 of
  the population
  died.
• There were not enough
  workers to harvest crops or produce goods.
• The survivors demanded better pay and the feudal
  system started to break down.
