• READING
• To develop competency and foster the desire to
  read.
• Introduced to several forms of literature,
  poetry, and plays.
• Encourage independent reading.
• To help students build confidence in their
  reading and promote an interest in, and
  appreciation for, the written word.
• CREATIVE AND EXPOSITORY WRITING
• To use various forms of writing student
  journals, group stories, letters, and poems.
• Encouraged to write for enjoyment and as a means
  of communication. 
• To learn the writing process (brainstorm,
  pre-write, first draft, edit, final draft) and
  produce final drafts for both individual and
  group assignments. 
• SPELLING
• To use developmental spelling as a springboard to
  standard spelling.
• To develop an awareness of phonetic patterns and
  word families.

• MATHEMATICS
• To develop an understanding of basic mathematical
  concepts. 
• To explore spatial relations, work with
  technology, and cultivate problem-solving
  techniques as part of their math experience. 
• To learn skip counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's,
  identifying place value to 100, mastering all
  basic addition facts and basic subtraction facts,
  adding and subtracting two-digit numbers without
  regrouping, measurement, telling time to the half
  hour, geometry and graphing.
• SOCIAL STUDIES
• Focus on individuals, expands to communities in
  our multi-cultural society
• To create a Me Booklet charts their growth,
  share family history, and share personal stories.
• To recognize their membership, role, and
  responsibilities within a community.
• Introduced to history and map skills.
• SCIENCE
• Focus on physical characteristics.
• Introduction to the scientific approach
• Learn about topics such as basic senses, physical
  properties, classification and survival needs. 
• Study of oceanography and marine biology, have
  the opportunity to dissect a squid. 
• Learn about food chains and act out the various
  components.
