Highlands Sports Medicine program has been
recognized both regionally and nationally as one
of the most educationally-innovative programs
available for high school students.

Sports Medicine students specialize in the care
and prevention of athletic injuries.

SPORTS MEDICINE
Inside the classroom, Sports Medicine students
study anatomy and physiology, medical
terminology, basic and advanced first aid,
emergency patient packaging, and evaluation and
rehabitation procedures.

Outside the classroom, Sports Medicine students
spend an extensive amount of time taking care of
Highlands athletes. They are also called upon
for numerous state athletic tournaments.

Two classes are available to students one for
beginning sports medicine students, the other for
advanced students.

During the first quarter of Year One, its
baptism by fire as football season is in full
swing. Students spend most of their time
concentrating on taping techniques. They also
study intensively about injuries to the head and
spine.

During the second quarter, students study more
about anatomy, focusing on injuries to the ankle
and knee. Students are kept busy outside of
class, too, with basketball and wrestling taking
center stage.

Injuries to the shoulder and elbow take
precedence in the third quarter. Meanwhile,
wrestling season wraps up with Highlands Sports
Medicine program hosting the State Wrestling
Championships. Our students take care of more
than 700 athletes from around the state.

The fourth quarter brings some rest, with
baseball, softball and track requiring less
medical supervision. Still, students are busy in
the classroom studying rehabilitation and
modalities.

Throughout the year, Year One students work
closely with many medical professionals on
Highlands sidelines. They also do job shadowing
at various medical complexes throughout Pocatello.

Year Two students help to mentor beginning
students in the training room, while doing more
in-depth anatomical study in the classroom.

Year Two students also do time observing in
local emergency rooms and operating rooms.

Advanced students also have the opportunity to
attain their Physical Therapy (PT) Aide
certificate. Some students also elect to
complete their Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA)
certificate.

New in 2003-2004, Year 2 Sports Medicine students
will also have the opportunity to complete their
Emergency Room Tech (ER-Tech) certificate thanks
to a partnership with PMC.

All Sports Medicine students gain valuable
exposure to the medical profession.

Sports Medicine include Athletic Training,
Physical Therapy, Orthopaedics, Nursing,
