    Beechdean Farmhouse Dairy Ice Cream.
  • Their family farm is based in the Chiltern Hills,
    UK.
  • It is an independent company which works on its
of 600 acres of farm land.
  • Their Location is
  • Old House Farm
  • North Dean
  • High Wycombe
  • Buckinghamshire
  • The farm has two types of cows, 120 Jersey cows
and 270 Friesian cows, they are used for milk and
    ice cream production.

Type of Farming
  • Dairy farming is the rearing of animals for milk
and other diary products, this makes Beechdean a
dairy farm as they make ice cream.
  • It is a commercial farm as the out puts are all
    for sale.
  • It is pastoral farming because the land is left
under the grass and the rearing of animals.
  • Pastoral farming is also extensive farming, due
    to the large areas.

Beechdean Farm and the Affect of Government
Policies
  • Milk Quotas Dairy farmers were producing too
much milk due to a fall in demand for milk
    products like butter.
  • Quotas were introduced and were the farms last 10
    years average milk production.
  • Farmers are allowed to produce that amount of
milk and no less, if they do, they are farmed.
  • Beechdean farm solved problem by making ice
cream, half their stock would be used for milk,
    the other for ice cream.
  • Today they are selling almost 2.5 million litres
    of ice cream a year.
  • Their has been a fall in dairy products prices
which resulted in Beechdean farm losing money and
    profits.
  • However, now their ice cream is their main source
of income and they are very successful with it.

Scientific Advances
  • Over the years cows have been bread to produce a
huge 50 to 70 litres of milk in one day, over 3-4
    milking sessions.
  • Before, approximately 100 years ago, cows only
produced around 20 liters a day.
  • The improved milk production is due to
  • Selective breeding for high milk-yield
  • Lots of nutrient-rich, high-energy food
  • Good housing and shelter - keeping the cattle
inside on clean straw bedding on cold days and
outside gently grazing on warm days

7
Conclusion
  • Beechdean farm is a good example of a very
successful and profitable farm. When they were
going to lose money from the EU policies, they
diversified, only to become even more profitable.
  • Beechdean farm has a very efficient input,
processes and feedback method and new technology
    has only improved this more.
  • They are a good example of well treated and cared
for animals produce excellent produce. Proper
breeding of the cows to get specific produces is
an effective way of producing quality goods.
