  McPherson Ridge
• By 330 p.m., the Union line breaks and troops
  fall back through the town to Cemetery Hill
• 27,000 Confederates vs. 20,000 Federals engaged

• Confederate army takes high ground on Seminary
  Ridge
• Confederate troops attack both the right and left
  flanks of the Union forces
• Assaults on both Union flanks turned back, with
  some loss of position
• 34,000 Confederates vs. 33,000 Federals engaged

Day 3July 3

• Late in the afternoon, Union center repulses
  Picketts Charge
• Position reached by Confederate troops on
  Cemetery Ridge called the High Water Mark of the
  Confederacy
• 20,000 Confederates vs. 20,000 Federals engaged

The Aftermath

• After the battle, Gettysburg was in shambles
• More than 51,000 killed, wounded, and missing
  soldiers left behind
• Wounded and dying crowded into every building in
  the town
• Many of the dead were hastily buried or not
  buried at all
