HEART
2What is the heart?
- Although it is about the size of your fist, the
heart is the strongest muscle in the body. Its
job is to pump blood throughout the body. It is
so good at cirulating blood that it takes only 20
seconds to pump blood to every cell of the body.
The heart is the main organ of the circulatory
system.
3Where is the heart located?
- The heart is located between the lungs and
behind the sternum
4The heart is divided into four chambers. The
four chambers are divided by the septum.
Septum
5What do the chambers do?
- The two upper chambers (atria) receive and
collect blood. - The two lower chambers(ventricles) pump the blood
throughout the body.
6What is the septum job?
The septums main job is to separate the left
side and the right side of the heart.
7Each chamber has a valve that allows the blood to
flow in and out of the heart.
From upper body
To the lungs.
From the lungs
From lower body
8What do the valves of the heart do?
- The tricuspid valve controls the blood flow
between the right atrium and the right ventricle. - The mitral valve allows oxygen-rich blood from
the lungs to pass from the left atrium into the
left ventricle.
9What do the valves do?
- The pulmonary valve and aortic valves are in
charge of controlling the flow as blood leaves
the heart.
10What does the aorta do?
- It carries oxygen-rich blood from the left
ventricle of the heart to the body. - It is the biggest and longest artery in the body.
aorta
11What blood vessels carry the blood away from the
heart?
12What blood vessels carry the blood back to the
heart?
13What vein carries all the blood from the upper
half of the body to the heart?
Superior vena Cava
14What vein collects all the blood from the lower
half of the body?
Inferior vena cava
15INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE HEART
- Although the heart is the most powerful muscle in
the body, it only weighs between 7 and 15 ounces. - The average heartbeat is 72 times per minute.
- An average heart pumps 2.4 ounces per heartbeat.
- An average heart pumps 1.3 gallons per minute.
Therefore, it pumps 1,900 gallons per day,
700,000 gallons per year, 48 million gallons for
a person 70 years old.
