TPI

• Started TPI in late 2006
• Dr. Fitzgibbons delivered Investment in
  Excellence to all staff
• I completed Investment in Excellence 3 times, Rex
  5 times, each experience was excellent
• From this experience and Scotts help we
  developed a truly unique modular approach to
  delivering thought patterns for our constantly
  changing student body.

Orientation

• Director / Director of Ed delivery
• Message from Dr. Joe Pace
• Quick discussion and personal explanation
• Overview reflective questions (use
• the music, it works!)
• Unit 1 reflective questions (F Cards, something
  to take away and use on family and friends, a
  true crowd pleaser and ice breaker)

Units 2 - 21

• One unit minimum per week (30 minutes)
• Delivered by all instructors
• Mandatory TPI inclusion in weekly lesson plans
  submitted every Friday to Director of Education
• Longer programs will complete the program twice
  or possibly more
• Certificate of completion awarded to
• student by end of program
• A must! They love the recognition!

The Pacific Institute Modular Rollout

• Orientation Introduction, Overview, Units 1
• 1 hour per week on TPI units to cover 2 units
  each week
• Week 1 Units 2 3
• Week 2 Units 4 5
• Week 3 Units 6 7
• Week 4 Units 8 9
• Week 5 Units 10 11
• Week 6 Units 12 13
• Week 7 Units 14 15
• Week 8 Units 16 17
• Week 9 Units 18 19
• Week 10 Unit 20 21
• Placement Department to co facilitate Units 10,
  11, 17, 19 and 20 as they relate to resume
  building and interview skills. They take place
  either in class when they are scheduled or during
  their placement workshops.
• This schedule will continue in a cycle so that
  all students regardless of their module start
  date will see every unit at least once if not
  twice!

• which in turn affects student retention
• Breaks ice with new and old students
• Livens up dry subjects or long lectures
• Tons of opportunity for admin staff
• and management involvement
• Helps with morale and getting all staff to live
  the classroom experience

• Can become something Peter said we have to do
  this so lets just get it over with and we can
  leave
• Instructors lose faith fast with student pushback
• Lack of stories to set the tone of the unit
• Same time each week best for scheduling, lose the
  spontaneity and students consistently can miss
  TPI
• I didnt sign up for this, I am not paying for
  this book

Eliminate the cons, increase the pros

• Ensure admin, instructor mgmt
• involvement
• Relate all professional development activities
• to TPI - this forces buy-in and keeps the
  concepts top of mind. This also allows for
  current success stories to share with students
• Great opportunity for referrals, friends
• and family always welcome when we
• are doing TPI
• Keep committees active and fresh

Results

• Grew 100 289 565 in a one
• year period and kept retention
• above 91
• Only 1 orientation where TPI was not delivered
  we lost 5 students, how many were we losing
  before?
• Ability to relate student complaints/challenges
  to a unit with a technique to get beyond the
  scotoma.
• Meeting starters in management and staff meetings
  is a great way to say the same thing from a
  respectable expert (ex. Accountability)
